Tire Size and Rating help

I know I know… Not another tire thread…
I promise I have searched and searched for the answers, but have not found any solid answers.

I am going to be buying some tires in the next couple of weeks, and I want to make sure I make the right choice first. I have decided on the Cooper Discoverer A/T3 because of the reviews and price. Considering I use my 4runner for mostly getting to work and back, I feel this was a fairly easy decision.

My first question is about the load rating. I am leaning towards the “C” rated tires for the weight savings and ride quality. Do you guys think the “E” rated tires would be worth getting for the extra sidewall protection and mileage? I have had a few flats in the desert running over sage brush with “P” rated tires, and really hate the feeling being all the way out there with a flat even with a spare.

My second question is about the size. I have a little bit different lift than most, and want to make sure I will clear the tires. I have the FJ suspension with the 1” (thick) budget boost spacer. I think I have gained ~2.25” of lift in the front between the two. I see a lot of people are running 285s with the 2.5” DS lift, but have to do some trimming. I am looking at either the 265/70/17 or the 275/70/17. I don’t see very many people that run 275, and I don’t know why??? Seems like a middle ground point that would be popular. I don’t want to rub, and am ok with removing the flaps, but more than that it is not worth it to me.

Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

My friend has the same lift you're talking about and running a 275/70/17 BFG AT. He rubs and to eliminate it he would need to trim the plastic and probably a small body chop. If you wheel lightly than I don't think you should worry about the body mount chop. His are also E rated and it does decent for the V6. GL

I would go for the 'c' load rating. No need for the 'e' on this truck.

The tread width on the BFG AT 275 is an inch wider that than the A/T3.
I wonder if this would reduce or eliminate the trimming required???
Other than that, the tires are almost identically sized.

If your just running from home to work and back the C's are plenty good. Even for mild off-roading they should be more than capable. If you are doing more rock crawling with sharp jagged rocks and/or traveling roads that are rutted pretty deep then I would go with the E's. That being said, I run "P" series Hankooks ATm and haven't had any issues in the 47k miles I've had them. Mostly on the tarmac but I've done some moderate trail running as well. Next time around I will probably go with some C's just for the deeper tread. I went with P's because I got a killer deal on them when discount tire screwed up what I ordered. With a stock wheel, I would think the 275 would contact the UCA when turning sharp, especially when flexing offroad. FJ and 5th gen wheels have a little less backspacing to help with the rubbing from running bigger tires, in case you were wondering.

I plan on running some sport wheels I just bought with wheel spacers.
I wish someont would make a 265/75/17...

I have the set-up you are running/going to end up with! I moved the fender liners forward and trimmed just a slight bit, i did that before I even bought the tires. My P265/70/17's dont rub at all right now, however a 275/70 would be really darn close!! A little more trim would take care of it I am sure. Don't be afraid to cut a little and move the liner, very simple, and hard to mess up.
