Tire size selection for mild lift with factory 18s

Currently I'm sitting on 5100s all around with FJ rears (moog) and .85 setting up front. Stock Limited 18" wheels and spidertrax 1.5" spacers. With the stock tires, I had to push the wheel liner up an inch or so to clear on reverse full turn, otherwise no issues.

I'm coming due for tires and I'd like to put a more aggressive and larger tire on there. I'm not against putting spacers out back and raising the front to 1.75 but would like to keep it reasonable for the family to get in and out of. I also don't know what limitations to the rear lift I have with the airbags installed. Will spacers affect the air bags?

I started to go through the lift central thread, but at 250+ pages of needle in a haystack, most are on 16" or 17" wheels.

So I'm open to thoughts and suggestions.

the last tires I ran on the 4Runner was the Nitto TerraGrappler. Good all around AT tire. Liked the look and they were quiet on the highway.

Most interested in size selection. I think I've narrowed down to a few A/T style tires but want to at least be in the ballpark on what size I can fit even if it requires a change or two to the current setup.

I'd go with either 255/70/18 or 265/65/18. Either should fit as is with a little additional trimming. If you bumped up the lift, you may be able to get by with no trimming at all.

Ok, so that sounds like a good starting point.

My big dilemma right now is do I go with 17" aftermarket or TRD wheels or do I stick with the limited 18's.

Decisions like this suck

Im in the same situation. If I kept my 18's, I'd go with 265/65/18 tires. But I've already decided to ditch the limited 18's for some 17's and Im going to run some 265/70/17 tires on them. I'm also on Bilstein 5100's, 0.85 setting up front, but I'm also sitting on FJ springs all around, so my front is lifted a little higher than factory springs.

i went with 255/70/18. they fit great even if stock and you keep mpg's vs those that put 285's on there trucks

Sounds like we're pretty much in the same boat. Looks like a 265/60-18 is about dead on size with the 265/70-17 with the obvious exception of the taller side wall. Overall diameter and width are spot on.

I'm just about settled on the Cooper AT/3 but still need to decide what load rating.

Have been advised by many friends that if I don't offroad much (which I don't), C load tires are the way to go and there is no point in spending extra money for E load tires. With that being said, I am going with some Toyo Open County AT2 265/70/17 P versions (C load).

I'm fine with C but haven't been able to figure out the difference between C and P ratings. They seem to be used interchangeably

My concern is that I occasionally pull up to the rated limit of the truck which is why the air bags. And I also need to be able to handle some light off roading when I go up to the mountains or out to the various mountain bike spots. But it's also a daily driver that is also in the highway for 80% of it's life.

I'm guessing C rated is just fine.

I have BFG duratracs 265/65/18 with no lift and those tires are amazing.

I'm guessing you mean Goodyear Duratracs ? But OP, you'd be fine with 265/70/18s if you can find it, It could be common, I just don't know off the top of my head. I think the 18 limiteds are some of the best wheels toyota made.

with as many different rims as you have put on your truck why not get 18's then?

they do look cool but tire options are not the best. i just got back from getting a matching spare tire and the tire i was there to get was the only one they had in that size

so 265/70-18 would put it at roughly 32.6" diameter. I'm guessing I'd have to do a bit of trimming to kill any rubbing if I'm rubbing now with the stock 365/60-18 which are only 30.5"

I wish I could find a shop that would test fit some tires before making a choice. But everyone in my area seems to have to order in tires for anything beyond the basics.

you might be able to get that size to fit with trimming. spidertrax spacers are just going to make it harder to fit them up front.

this is 255/70/18's with spidertrax spacers before i cut some of the bumper to make it fit. so 265/70/18's might be more work getting them to fit without any problems

If that's the only area I have to end up cutting, I'm perfectly happy to do so. I've already pushed the liner up about an inch and a half as it would rub with the stock size after adding the spacers. I can rework that area easy enough.

I'm running 265/70/18s on mine, and you'll need 2.5"-3" lift and trimming to fit them.

Also, P and C ratings are not the same. I run P rated since I spend little time off road. I get better mpg and a smoother ride. From a capacity perspective, P rated tires are all you need. I've ran E rated tires and you can definitely feel them (added weight and stiffer ride). For someone who spends a lot of time off road, the other ratings make sense.

P rated = 4 plys
C rated = 6 plys
D rated = 8 plys
E rated = 10 plys

haha, I just got my FJ 8 Hole 17s. As well as brand new 275/70/17. They're staying for a good while.

I'm only on my 1,2,3........4th set of wheels. Made money on the previous 3 sets. As well as my 5th set of tires. Which I've at least broken even on, so i can't complain too man. haha.
