Tire size?

I was wondering if I can put 33x12.5r15 BFGoodrich A/T's on my 2nd gen. Its stock height and everything, but even with the 31x10.5 Nexen Roadian A/T's (which suck in the mud just an FYI) I still seem to have quite a bit of clearance. If there is modification required to fit the 33's, what would it be? I'm sooner or later going to lift it 1-3 inches and I really just hate these Nexen's and want bigger tires anyway :biggrin2:

There is a thread just for this. Tire and lift thread at the top of this section. And there are several other threads on this if you google. But yes it should fit but there may be some rubbing

I'd go 33/10.5 instead of 33/12.5. All you need to do is hammer the pinch weld. Takes 5 min tops.

I understand that some people like the wider tire because it has that vato from cali look, and some people want them because they drive in the sand alot.

However, the wider the wider you go, the less pressure your tire will put on the ground over its contact path, this can be a bit scary in wet or icy conditions. Not to mention (but I will) the wider tires will road walk more, they are harder on your rack and pinion, they can add extra wear to your bearings and lastly depending on state laws you may be required to cover the exposed part of the tire with flaps and flairs.

Depending on the offset of your wheels, 12.5's will rub on the inside. If you want to run that wide, make sure you have the right offset or get wheel spacers.

But I bet if you went and looked, you don't have another 1.25" room between the tire and a-arm to fit a 33/12.5?

Also, clearance will get worse if he adds a BJ spacer in the future which is the more cost effective way to get a decent lift.

The 12.5 will rub when turning. What wheels are you currently running. A 12.5 will be too wide for a stock rim FYI.


This is my runner with 12.5 BFG at tires for a comparison. The are decently wide but nothing crazy, but my suspension is not stock.

I was told by an older gentlemen who had a multiple yotas from the late 80s to early 90s that a 33in tire will fit under stock height. Now I think that is great because I would want a bigger tire but then I thought about when I had the stock 31in tires and they rubbed when turning hard so I assume that 33s would rub even worse. If rubbing doesn't bother you than go with the wider tire. Personally I would stick with 10.5in wide because that is what the rim is made for, but it is your runner. As for me I will probably go back to the 31s instead of the 28s I have now; makes the runner look funny with smaller tires
