Tire suggestions

I have not seen anyone ping on the mastercraft tires. I run the Wild Country XTX All-terrains and LOVE them. i run 265/75s. I got them because my buddy wheels a cherokee and wrangler and runs these on his wrangler while he runs a diff mud terrain. He ALSO managers the major tire shop around here and still prefers these over the major brands which he can get cheaply.

I have used this in light mud, street, snow, and ice. With AWD on and snowy roads, I can launch from a light like there isnt even snow on the ground. These tires have lots of siping on them. While these are AT and youre speaking about the Mastercraft MT, I just want to prove a point that these "offbrand" tires can be just as good.

I run some Achilles tires on my Mazda on the street. They look good, ride nice, and wear great, but theyre garbage on performance on any level. So no, a tires isnt just a tire, but the Masetrcraft/Wild Country tires are great tires for cheap.

I have put over 300,000 miles on 5 sets of these with very good results. The tire is good at everything and looks great too. Quiet and only 41 lbs per tire. $135.45 per tire. Mud, snow, sand, gravel, and of course on-road it has never let me down.

don't for the ply rating... it's how thick the tire is... the thicker the less flexable and more durable.

it seems to me that 4runners that race, like soft walled tires, and those that crawl like thicker tires, and those that passanger... well they get the cheapest tires they can find.

I went thick, I like my ride, it's more 'turck' feeling with a more durable tire,
I had the BFG rugged trail:
soft tire,
kinda aggressive tread,
CHEAP to find,
swallowed road bumps way faster than my suspension could,
air down was amazing at 19psi, (looked flat at 10psi lol)
lots of sidewall flex on the rocks

I also had the Pathfinder sport S A/T:
tougher tire,
not at all aggressive,
great snow travel,
decent mud (never was thick mud),
needed to air down to 10psi to be the same as the rugged trails,
very quiet

Currently have the Nitto Trail Grapplers: 285/70r16
this is the only tire in THAT size...
STUPID thick walls,
air down at 10psi does help but feels like the rugged at full inflation,
GRIPPY! I've never went through sand so easily and effortlessly.
can take a betting and I've never lost a bead (that's a plus right there)
louder on the road
WORTH IT!
makes the 4 runner feel more like a truck.

Hope you don't mind me throwing this bit of info on this thread... It doesn't apply to your original question, but since I was also looking for a new set of tires and I wasn't having much luck locally for selection, I found these.

Not a bad price, and they claim free shipping (even to me). I had a set of Kumhos on my 1st Gene 4Runner and loved them. Cheap (in price), well made tire. My problem is, no one in Alaska carries them.

I spec-ed them out on two different sites and have received very high marks. Almost the highest I've seen. If I remember correctly, they do weigh a bit more then average (I've looked at so many the past two days, I could be getting them confused).

But these are what I'm going to look into more.

I currently have the Toyo MT in 255/85R16 (pizza cutters) and I LOVE THEM!!!! They have been in everything and held up great (never aired down because of no compressor to air back up). I've built my rig for exploring / expidition and I only got nervous once in deeper mud with no bottom in it. Not what I perfer to be in, in general but they still got me in and out with no issues.

What attracts me to the Nitto is, again my style of driving. I perfer mountains, dirt, river and creek beds. Plus a lot of highway miles to get me there. I just think that might be a better tire overall for what I've built my 4Runner for.

Sorry to OP if this is a hijack but, psraff, you have the exact tire and size I've been eyeballing for my rig. I'm also going for an expedition style rig. Did the 255s fit without the body lift? I've currently got a Fox 2.5 coilover set up and I'm trying to figure out if I'll be able to stuff the 255s down there w/o having to add a body lift.

(Feel free to PM me if we need to keep the clutter down in this thread.)

Stock, New or Original Suspension? What year, 99s were a bit taller.
200lbs for bumper and winch? What do you have on there?? My CBI, I picked it up and installed it by myself. I'm sure it wasn't anywhere close to 200lbs. I could be wrong though.

32 x what? If narrow I don't think it's an issue. Wide tire, turning up into a curb or driveway, you may rub when the suspension compresses.

yes it will. very slight chance you might rub turning into parking spot ect. but you should be more then fine

I don't want to muddy the water here, but are KM mud tires good for all purpose? I'm imagining a mud tire being good at dirt and mud, but not necessarily snow , rain and ice. Someone locally on CL has BFG KMs on Jeep rubicon wheels 255/75/17. But that would require a lift right?

I pulled the trigger!! Got the Falken Wild Peak AT3W off DT's ebay sale. $408 total with the $100 off.

Local install will be 16/tire when I do it (likely in the late summer as my tread's still good) so totally worth it.

Sure, some people love the KO2 over the AT3s, but others love the newly designed AT3. The way I see it, both are good AT tires and this past season I saw my worst ever hunting roads (mud, giant stones, and side to side road differences of 3-4 feet with horrible traction) and I got out of there with Les Schwab Wildcats (previous owners choice). So....I think I'll be good with these.

After doing some research I pulled the trigger on a tire that I haven't seen many use.

I bought a set of ProComp Xtreme MT2's (265/75/16). I only have right around 500 miles on them now, and haven't had any use in mud, snow or rock. They've done very well in hard rain and have nice road characteristics at 30psi with slight noise.

I paid right around $1k all in (with shipping) and they came with a 40k mile warranty. May be something to think about. Car's a factory suspension 99 limited.

I've ran different muds over the years. They are horrible on the street. Ice and light snow they do very bad. New tires feel like worn out tires in situations. Little moisture on road and you can easily spin tires.

Dirt, rocks, mud, and heavy snow they are amazing.

I try to run a/t on daily drivers.

I had the put on today and they rubbed against the plastic inside wheel well. The only tire that rubbed was the driver side all other tires were fine. Damn!!!! At a lost but all I need to do is modify the plastic so the tire doesn't make contact. Any ideas????

strange. I have put several sets on for customers in that size with no problems what so ever. If it is just the plastic there is a few things you can do.. you can get a heat gun warm it up really good then push it back and spray with water to cool it. that will reform it back further. you can cut what you need out a lot of the time with a good knife or you can poke a hole in it get a zip tire and find a place to suck it back further.
