Tire Truing/Shaving?

Anyone have any experience with tire truing/shaving? I got some BFG AT's off craigslist and had my friend pick them up for me. The guy told me they were 95% tread and great condition. Well they are 90% tread (not a big deal), but two of the tires are worn/cupped and causing vibrations. I'm tempted to get the two tires shaved by a somewhat local shop. They said they should be good once they shaved them, but it costs $110 for both tires. Anyone done this to larger more aggressive tread tires and had positive results?

It seems to be a dying art. Finding a tire store that can competently run a regular tire balancing machine, is getting tougher.

Anyway, while they might be able to shave and true the tread so they roll smooth, I'd be more concerned with how old the tires are. Have you checked the date code?

Spending a bunch of money on tires that might be ready for replacement just due to age, might be throwing good money after bad.

The tires are 1 year old and only have 8k on them, so they are worth saving. He got them through Discount and has the replacement certificates, but they said they can't replace them. I'm just bummed I would have to pass them along since they are basically brand new. The guy I talked to was VERY knowledgeable about shaving and assured me they'd be good to go after that, but it's a bit unnerving having my tires shaved.
