Tires for a '98 SR5

Hey, I had this question on the new members forum and someone told me to post it here for more responses: Hey, new to the 4 Runner world and just purchased a '98 SR5 that according to the info. on the door came stock with 225/75R15 tires. It now has 16" rims and is in need of 4 new tires. I fish and hunt and paddle on occasion which take me off road somewhat and also live in the midwest where we get some decent snows from time to time. Don't have to drive this vehicle to work so would be driven around town some and then anywhere from 60 to 500 miles on the highway to get to a good paddling or hunting spot. Looking for any good recommendations on 245/70R16s or 265/70R16s. Saw the Cooper Discoverer AT3 the other day and from what I have read seems to be a decent all-around tire - any insight/experience with these or any other brands? Also anyone know anything about Hankooks? Either the ATM or the road tire HT version? Thanks!

I've got the exact same 4Runner as you. Mine is mostly a daily driver, but when I needed new tires, I was doing a little off-roading to some campsites and whatnot. I went with the Yokohama Geolander AT and have not regretted it one bit. In Chicago winters, it handles pretty well in the snow. Here's a link to the tires at tirerack.com. Mine also now has 16 but says it came with 15 s. Any reason not to go back to 15s? I like the look better.

I wonder why this site looks so in-active.

I'm wondering what's the biggest tire I can mount on my stock 98 sr5 rwd with 15" rims.. but wonder if I'll ever get any answers here.

Its not in-active, people just kind of get tired answering the same questions all the time. There are stickys that answer your questions, as well as google.

To answer: Factory stock was 15", however, many were upgraded to the 16'' wheel from the dealer. The VIN sticker will still show 15". You cannot use a 15" if yours currently has 16" wheels because the 15" won't fit over the brake caliper.

Biggest stock tires we can fit are 32". That will give none to minimal rubbing. It is possible to fit a 33" without a lift, but rubbing will be there.

I highly recommend yokohama geolander at/s as well. They have a very similar tread style as the coopers.

I can see how answering noobs questions over and over can get tiresome but you'd think noobs who just figured it out would teach the new noobs. lol.

I checked the rim and tires.. I've got the 15" rim. lol.

Do they upgraded brakes at the dealer? That's why I now have 16s? interesting. I was planning a tundra swap anyway. Just curious

They didn't upgrade them at the dealer. The sports and limited edition models came with 16" wheels and upgrade brakes. Some dealers did upgrade the stock 15" wheels to 16" so you do need to check the sticker inside your door to see if it originally came with 15s.

you type in the size you are looking for, then it will convert it to inches. I find it easier to understand what I'm 'looking' at for tires. I can't seem to wrap my head around the metric numbers.

Thanks junr.. So looking at that site.. I'm understanding that by 32".. they mean how wide the tire can be and not how tall?

When reading 32X11.50....32 refers to the height, 11.50 is the width.

the size you are showing: 265/70 r15 converts to 30X10.43.

I have the 15" Steelies.

So 265/75 R15 should still be good. Or could I go bigger without issues?
