Tires for a 98. Suggestions?

I have experience with two different tires on 4Runners:
Michelin LTX M+S: Good ride, quiet. Last forever (75K minimum). Decent grip on dry pavement, Mediocre grip on wet pavement. Dangerously bad grip on snow/ice.
Michelin Cross-Terrain: Excellent ride, responsive steering, very quiet, decent tread life (~60K). Good grip on dry & wet pavement, decent grip on snow/ice.
Neither of these tires are low-priced. IMHO, you get what you pay for and you live with a set of new tires for a loooong time, for better or for worse.

I saw someone asking about the best all season tire and I think this one is one of the best. The rain traction is incredible as well.
I got the Bridgestone "HL" tire and they are NICE!
A lot of tires in the stock size look super skinny, NOT THESE. Most tires, like the stock ones have roudned sidewalls which make it look not so beefy. Even in 275/70/16 it look skinnier than the stock tires.
The bridgestone "HL" is the only Suv tire with a 60k treadwear waranty, besides the new Fortera tire. These are NOT the same as the stock Bridgestones that come on some 4Runners. These have a 460 treadwear rating. The have a really sweet sidewall and ride super smooth. I had them in the rain yesterday and there is no comparision to the stock tires, (RT/S), these are amazing. They are also aover an INCH wider than the stock tires in the same size!
They have "UNI T" technology in them. As the tire wears down, different rubber compounds are exposed... This lets the tire perform as good as new when they wear down.
Here is a quote from Consumer reports, "We've since tested another contender that ties for best overall performance: the Bridgestone Dueler H/L, $96. Like the top-scoring BF Goodrich, the Bridgestone performed extremely well in the tests we weight most heavily--braking, handling, and hydroplaning."
The "HL" doesn't have that knobby tread like an AT tire. It's a tire that is good in all overall conditions and super smooth.
I wanted a good performing tire, and a tire that looked great too. I don't do offroading, except occasional snow fun.
I recommend this tire to anyone that wants a smooth long lasting tire with good/sporty looks. It also comes in white letters if you choose to use them

i bought not to long ago the new Goodyear Wrangler silent armors. i bought them mainly because i do alot of off roading and some highway. and they replace a couple layers of steel with kevlar. hence forth stronger and absorbs a ALOT of roadnoice for these big things. and if you buy the "road hazard" warentee you get off road assitance so they can winch you out free of charge and free flat repairs and tire rotations. granted they are pricey...well worth it

Last week I got the bridgestone dueler REVOs put on my 98 and i LOVE them. They handle so much better than the stock wrangler rt/s tires that were on there before. Nice and quiet ride, great handling on the road (dry and wet) and they look amazing (a beefier look than the stock tires). Also, took it accross a field I sometimes go on for fun and these new tires made me feel more confident.
The reason I chose them is because I go to school in upstate ny and the winters are harsh. My wranglers were almost shot so I decided to upgrade tires since I needed new ones before the winter anyway. I chose the revo's after reading a lot about tire suggestions but the main thing that got me was the rating. Tirerack gives them the highest rating of the tires they have for our model 4runner and they completely blow away the ratings of the stock wranglers.

I just bought the new Goodyear Fortera's last month, the one's with Kevlar and I noticed a definite change in feel over the Cooper's I had before. I would recommend the Fortera's for the smooth ride (I don't do any offroading) but they are a little pricey.

How about the Toyo open Country Tires? I have had good luck with Toyo on my old Acura. I thought of getting Toyo for my 4Runner, they had a good write up in Consumer Reports. A good tire for on road driving. Cheaper than Michelin Cross-Terrains. I decided to go with the Cross Terrains, they have been excellent for my type of driving. I have put 40,000 and they show some sign of wear, but they are holding up well.heger said:

Just picked up a set of Toyo H/T's to replace my Dunlop's and I'm very impressed so far. The Toyo A/T's I had on my Tacoma are by far the best tires I've ever owned. Fact is, I'd put Toyo up against any tire manufacturer in the free world. Goodyear is crap, Bridgestone is mostly crap (except for Revos), Michelin is good but overpriced, BF Goodrich is fair to middlin' depending on the tire.
