tires?

ok, so im thinking that the first thing i want to do to up my Runner's off-road capability is new tires.
im pretty much hooked on Cooper's STT's.

i also want about a 2-2.5 in. lift at the same time.

so could someone help me out with what size tires i might want to get and what type and brand of lift?

That's a mouthful of questions and I'll asnwer a couple but do a search for lifts and tires since there's so many opinions.

What kind of wheeling are you going to do? Real off road or intermediate stuff? In stock trim you can fit 265/75s but with the biiger lift you can squeeze 285/75 tires under it.

isnt the second number in the 265/70R/16 the width of the wheel and tire? cuz that's what mine are right now.
i also like the BFGoodrich All-Terrain. its got some prety nice grip and is suitable for everyday driving. as for my wheeling, i like to play in the mud, water, and the trails.

265/70R/16, The second number is the height of the tire side wall from the rim lip to the tread, but it is a percentage.

265 is the width of the tire in millimeters, from side wall to side wall across the tread.

The 70, is 70 percent of 265, so the height of this tire is 185.5 millimeters.

so really the only thing that has to do with how the tire fits on the rim is the last number?

the last number would be the rim size.

I have 265/75/16 (biggest tire you can fit stock) so 265 is the width in mm and the 75 is the sidewall height which is 75% of the 265 width and then the rim size.

I like BFGs but the Nittos have better overall on-road manners especially in the rain and snow (I've got over 10 years on BFGs) and they cost a couple hundred less. I drive hard on mine including cornering and I still should see 50k out of them.

Don't get me wrong BFGs are still a solid tire (2nd choice for me) but on-road performance left a bit to be desired plus not everybody and their mother has Nittos. :

Three years on mine and even off road they've performed well.

Stay away from the Coopers... they are soft and wear to quickly on the highway... I had them on my jeep.. they do however perform well off road... just dont last very long.. My buddy did not head this warning and bought some for his F150... now he is cussing them and whining about them... I warned him =) they also tend to wear uneven and get really loud... I would go with the BFG KO's the best all round IMO

i ordered a 3 inch lift from toytech.com. I got an old man emu which I have been told is really good for toyotas. I dont have any complaints about it and the price was pretty reasonable.

and how much is a set of 265/75R/16's gonna run me?

for tires i would recommend the firstone transforce. its a ten ply tire which means they are heavy and a little rougher riding, but you can get about 40k out of them. i had a set on my 96 before i got rid of it and drove them through snow mud and dry pavement. they handle well in snow and mud, but are not specifically designed for mud. they wear pretty normal as well. if you look around you should be able to get them for about 500 a set, kind of pricey but a real good tire. and for a lift, you have a lot of options depending on how much you want to spend. cheapest way but isnt the best is to go with a spacer lift from www.toyteclifts.com they also offer a coil spring lift for 360 but you have to buy shocks on top of that so you can do it for about 650. www.rocky-road.com offers a complete OME lift for 649.
www.sonoransteel.com offers a lift kit with everything you need for 1250. its a bit more expensive but they put custom parts in with the kit. if you shop around and buy all the parts seperate you can save a lot of money. you need front coils and shocks off the front of an 02 tundra w/offroad pkg. for the rear you need coils and shocks off an fj 80 (93-98) landcruiser. look for 96, its the easiest to find.
