Tires

Hi,
Just bought a 2005 4Runner Sport Edition V8 and it came with Dunlops Grandtrek AT20 tires. I understand that these are not the greatest tires and would like to replace them with better ones. Also would like to maintain the original size of 265/65-17.
Will also be towing a travel trailer at some point.
Been looking at Yokohama Geolandar(G51),Michelin Cross-Terrains,BF Goodrich, etc. Would like to hear from other owners about their experiences with different tires and which ones the majority of owners feel are the best ones.

I switched to Birdgestone A/T Revos 265/70/17, so upsized by an inch. They grip alot better on raod in any weather condition than the Dunlops, wont even need to mention offroad. They are louder and my gas mileage went down. I wouldn't recommend A/Ts unless you have a need for them. The tires that sounds the best for your use might the Michelin Cross Terrians. Search around and you will get more feedback

how many mpg do you get now (after your lift, tires)? should I expect it to be significantly lower if I used BFG A/Ts (265/70/17's, 3" lift) instead?

I used to easily get an average of 20/21 MPG in my cycle of highway/city commute on my V8. I tend to drive pretty fast and the traffic is pretty bad a lot of the time.

I now get 17/18, although I noted lately it went up to 19, but I would say expect to loose 2 mpg with bigger A/T tires and a lift. That is for my cycle of highway/city driving. I think you will do worse if you go 3" lift and BFGs (I think the BFGs are heavier than the Revos, but dont know.( Other can chime in on their experiences in MPG after lift and tires.

Wouldn't the bigger size of the tires offset your mpg calculations? You would actually be going further than it registers on the odometer with bigger tires.

I already corrected for that, I use my GPS to establish the difference in ODO vs real miles. My ODO used to read 2% less miles than really travelled, now with 32" tires it is 5% less miles registered. I correct that before calculating mpg by hand.
