I have 4.10 gears with 265/75/16 BFG's and it's fine. It just holds the gear a little longer than normal.

A little more info on what you'll be doing with your 4Runner would help like how many miles a year will you be putting on the truck,off road alot,daily driver,snow/rain or both?

Hard to recommend a tire without knowing how it will be used.

Micheline LTX is good for mostly highway(60-80k) and surprised me for light off-road
Duratracs- reports are favorable for off-road and snow conditions and do well on road
Nitto Terra Grapplers- good highway, good off-road, not that great in snow or mud.

@Mad69 I have a 4.30 gear ratio i believe w/ the locking rear differential
@Ronmaiden- mostly daily driving but planing to go 4x4 couple of times living in California so weather is pretty good no rain or snow.
@Pikeman - Looking at Nitto Terra looks pretty good

What do you guys think about the Yokohama Geolandar M/T or even Yokohama tires in general. I know they are not BFG but I can get a great discount on Yokohama
 
Years and years ago (late 80's early 90's) only ran the Yokohama tires and they were pretty good. Still hear they have a good reputation. If you are doing a lot of highway I would stay away from an M/T they were faster and wont last as long as a good AT. I went with the NIttos because I got a screaming deal on them and have been happy. If you can get a deal on the Yoko's then go for it.

If you are doing only highway, then just get a highway tire. They are way cheaper, will last longer, and will drive better than any AT, MT, winter tire, etc. and will get better gas mileage. I just switched back from my duratracs to my destination HT's, and it drives alot better on the road, and gained me a solid 1-1.5mpg. The duratracs weren't bad, but they certainly weren't a highway tire.

Or you could do what I did, get a cheap 2nd set of wheels off CL and run a summer and winter set. Best of both worlds for as little cost as possible. I had yokohama's before the destinations, and I thought they were fine. They were pretty bald so didn't do well in the winter, but that'll happen to any tire.
 
I just installed my hankook dynapros a few weeks ago, love them so far.

I ended up getting the BFG All Terrain. I was gonna get the Nitto but the BFG where cheaper got 4 tires for 800. Thanks for the advice everyone.

research, but the 5spd are 4.10's and the auto had 4.30's (from my research that is)

I am looking at the Hankooks also. due to price. Duratracs if they go on sale.

but we shall see when it comes to that point. might do two sets too. now that I have two sets of rims. hehehe :girl:
 
If you do any off roading then the BFG All Terrains.
If you only drive on pavement then the Michelin LTX M/S.
Both are great tires.
