09/13/18 - Brakes Part 2 - rear rotors and calipers
Here goes the rotors and calipers. I was dreading a bolt or two needing to be drilled out because that's what I had to do with my RX7, which originally was from Minnesota.
A little liquid wrench just in case. I actually been spraying it every few days for the past week and had a torch on hand as well.
But the bolts surprisingly broke pretty easily with just the breaker bar. They're way larger than the RX7 bolts though, so that may be a factor.
Removing the old stock line wasn't too bad either.
I liked the design they did for compressing the rear piston. Good thing I had my metal paint pan to catch the shot of brake fluid that came out.
Rotor took some back and forth with a rubber mallet but it eventually gave on both sides. I had to also use a screw to separate it some.
The calipers I got were from eBay, some remanufactured "performance" calipers. I got just the 5th gen rear calipers. It was actually not that much more to get the front and rear plus pads, but I already bought pads back in February and I'm doing a BBK in the front so no need to have excess parts laying around.
I bought Stoptech slotted rotors. In retrospect, I probably should have just gone blanks. Even my performance cars in the past and currently come stock with blanks in the rear.
Here are the new SS lines for the caliper to the axle hard line. This is why I should have just gone with the Goodrich set. I bought 3 center lines from 3 different companies and also had to buy this rear set too. The Stoptech lines fit great. I had to file some of the Low Range line so it would go into the bracket properly.
The old bolts that held in the calipers weren't in such bad shape. Just some exterior corrosion. I could have reused them really.
Here's what I'll be using for pads and fluid.
The old pads were about 50% gone. Probably could have kept going with them for a while if I hadn't already bought the new ones.
I painted on the anti-seize so IF I ever had to remove the rotors in the future, they wouldn't be as much of a pain as they were today.
Here's everything assembled back up. They look pretty good even. Mostly cosmetic but maybe get that extra 5% braking feel...maybe.
I didn't quite finish since I didn't have another person there to help me bleed the lines. I'll button it all up tonight. I also removed the useless spare tire.
Front brakes will probably be Sunday or Monday... Hands and back are beat.
