To those who have turbocharged

What size turbo did you end up with? I'm thinking of an hy35 with a 9cm exhaust housing from a dodge diesel. Should spool almost right off idle and still make decent power.

Did you do the calculations for sizing the turbo? If you haven't may want to. google is your friend, I have a feeling that that turbo is out of the efficency range for our motors.

Ahhhh ic.

There are others who have done it too.

Holset all the way. I say a hx30 or 35 would be perfect. I know 2.0L 4 bangers getting 30psi at around 5k rpms. With these motors they woudl spool pretty good. I would say good 10psi at 3k rpms.

When I stop driving this thing and done with my DSM drag car I think I might try putting a holset on this baby.

I'm a huge fan of holsets. Dang near bulletproof turbos. Just not certain which size. I can get my hands on an hx35 with a 12cm exhaust housing really easily.

50 is way out of their efficiency range. 35-40 all day long but 50 is just hot air. With that being said I've had buddies running them at 50 and above with zero issues out of them. Besides I'm only look for 5-7psi which I should be able to run a fairly small turbo to help with nice neat packaging and good spool up without choking the top end out.

You would think. You are a diesel guy, I have seen you guys run hx35's over 40psi. Us turbo DSM guys have ran turbos way past efficiency and still got gains. Only way we could do this was running e85 and meth/water injection kits.

Also when I say 50psi. They are balanced at 50psi by holset.

On my 16g it was effiecient to around 28psi before hot air. After e85/meth we ran it too 36psi dropping too 30psi at red line and was able to make a good 30whp and 30lb/tq on the dyno.

People have now ran that turbo to over 40psi and pushed a talon to the 9's and this is a stock turbo from an evo 3 lancer. Its the size of a pop can. But I wouldnt run the holset at over 40psi. Thats just asking for trouble.

Didn't say we didn't push them well above 40psi, just never recognized any gains going that high with them. Usually jumped up to an s300 based turbo at that point or maybe an hx40 if you wanted to play russian roulette.

s300 is a good turbo but the holset hx40 just seems to outspool it on our little motors. You guys dont have to worry about that Im sure. People have made 700+whp on hx40 in a 2.0L. Usually turbos will outlast the motors. LOL.

The hx40's are ticking time bomb's. Anything more than 40psi and they'll pop. Slightest hint of bark and they'll pop. Buddy of mind had one live for a couple of years but that's because his clutch slipped so bad it wouldn't make full boost. First run with a new clutch that grabbed it spiked to 50psi and blew the center section in half.

700hp and we are usually in the 66mm compressor range or larger. Real fun starts when you run something like an S472 as a single and only have a 4000rpm redline. I had mine lighting at 2000rpm and full boost by 2500rpm. 4wd 20psi boosted launches on 35" tires is stupid fun.

I'm running a HX30 with a 6cm housing. I initially ran the HX35 with what i believe was the 12cm housing but it did not spool until about 3500rpm which was too high for what i'm after. I think that the 12cm housing is too big for these motors especially since we are redlining at 5500rpm

A buddy of mine ran the HY35 with the 9cm housing which worked pretty well

If you are going rear mount, go on the smaller side IMHO. Or just bay mount it :p

I've looked around the bay mounting option but I don't have the skill to fab up complete manifolds. Rear mount is easier on the fab work. Not easy, just easier. And certainly agree on the smaller side. Not too worried if it doesn't have the best top end power because regardless it'll have more than it does now I just need something to pick up the bottom and mid range. Hence why I'm looking at tiny turbos.

These turbos are not really "tiny" on this motor. You could make some crazy power on an hy35. Maybe tiny on your diesel. The turbos you have mentioned will give you 3k rpm and up power. So they will help with top end. If you want low to mid get a TRD supercharger. I know the hx35's ive seen run on small motors make power from 3500-10000 rpms. Not the other way around.

So what would be a good "tiny" turbo to run then?

I don't think that's the right question... I think the right question is to ask yourself:
'Where do I want the turbo to help?'
so for me, if this was my project...

I'd want the turbo to help in hauling, and freeway, otherwise, never used.
so full boost 2500+rpm for me. so probably around 2000-2500 would be the spool range, everything else can go to the WG.
reasoning on higher RPM... around town if always using the turbo at lower speeds, I'll eat gas, maybe get 50% of my normal MPG... cause I'm always using it. but for higher RPM's that I'm not in most of the time, UNLESS I'm already moving, then I'll use it.

I can see my self use a turbo in the future, mostly because the TRD SC is no longer made, and it will be more costly to get one than to add a turbo.

my range I think I want to perform the 'same-ISH' as a SC at 7-10 psi, nothing crazy and hopefully skip needing an inter-cooler.

granted my knowledge is limited, so let others tear apart my theory and ideal usage.

but i probably won't do a turbo, unless EVERYthing fell into my lap (more set down gently into my lap )
