To those who have turbocharged

My advice would be to become very knowledgeable about how a Turbo works, what your needs/wants are, and how to size it properly for your needs/wants, then make your decision.

Garrett has a Turbo Tech section on their website, that starts out with the basics, and goes from there.

I haven't ever looked into a Turbo for the 5VZ-FE, so I've never done the calculations. Of course the calculations would vary, depending on what kind of power characteristics you're looking for.

Most of my experience with Turbocharged engines has been on Land Speed Racing Motorcycles (mostly I-4's) and cars (mostly V8's). Which is not directly applicable to a stock, street-legal 5VZ-FE's needs.

Exactly my problem. My experience with turbos has been on high horsepower diesels and not gas engines and given how few turboed 4runners are out there it makes it even more challenging.

subscribed... the idea of a turbo has piqued my interest... zero experience modding engines though so I'm interested to hear what you come up with... good luck!

I'm not looking for a speed demon here. I've got my car for that. I'm just looking for something that will get out of it's own way.

I still never got a good answer on this, but does anyone know how much WTQ our engines can hold? What goes first? Rods?

How much power they can handle, as with any engine, depends on how you generate that power. A turbocharged engine with a power curve that ramps-up relatively gently, is easier on internals compared to say a big shot of n2o, which if not progressively added, sharply increases cylinder pressure, bearing loads, and stress on all components.

No, I haven't experimented with the 5VZ-FE, to know where the weakest link is. If I were concerned about rotating assembly strength, I'd start with the rods and pistons, as those are generally a weaker link than the crank.

There are better options than stock, for the entire rotating assembly of the 5VZ-FE.

I don't think that's the right question... I think the right question is to ask yourself:
'Where do I want the turbo to help?'
so for me, if this was my project...

I'd want the turbo to help in hauling, and freeway, otherwise, never used.
so full boost 2500+rpm for me. so probably around 2000-2500 would be the spool range, everything else can go to the WG.
reasoning on higher RPM... around town if always using the turbo at lower speeds, I'll eat gas, maybe get 50% of my normal MPG... cause I'm always using it. but for higher RPM's that I'm not in most of the time, UNLESS I'm already moving, then I'll use it.

I can see my self use a turbo in the future, mostly because the TRD SC is no longer made, and it will be more costly to get one than to add a turbo.

my range I think I want to perform the 'same-ISH' as a SC at 7-10 psi, nothing crazy and hopefully skip needing an inter-cooler.

granted my knowledge is limited, so let others tear apart my theory and ideal usage.

but i probably won't do a turbo, unless EVERYthing fell into my lap (more set down gently into my lap )

Same boat here, and I share that ideal
I'd love to turbo this 4runner, but I've got 4 other cars with similar "wish list" upgrades to fulfill.
