too much security

New user here. New 4Runner owner too! I love it!

Mine is a 2003 SR5. This isn't a big issue, but more of an annoyance. Is there a way to get my truck to unlock all the doors (including the rear door) by simply hitting the unlock button once? I'd also like to have all the doors unlock when exiting the vehicle. I realize it's a security feature, but I can't imagine a scenario where I would want all the doors locked except the drivers door, but that seems to be what the truck ALWAYS wants to do... I'd like to set it so that if ONE door is unlocked, they're ALL unlocked...
My goal is to make it so all doors are unlocked until you tell it otherwise... rather than vice-versa...

Is this do-able?

If you hit the button twice, you will open all doors. The idea is for people who may not want to unlock the doors they can't see at night to prevent an unwanted someone from entering the vehicle.

I realize it's a security feature, but it doesn't really fit my preferences so I'd like to change it if possible.

Forgive the question, but pushing the button twice does not suit your preference? Pushing the button twice is just as easy as pushing it once, but if you really insist this is a programmable feature by the dealer. Give them some money (I heard $75) and they'll reprogram to open all doors on a single button push.

It's not the "have to hit unlock twice" that bugs me as much as the vehicle's insistence on always locking all it's doors by default...

I'm in an area where I don't have to be too concerned about security and if possible I'd rather have all the doors unlocked at all times, until I hit the LOCK button.

I agree this is far from the worst problem in the world, I'd just like to fix it if it's easy...

I have to agree as well. I honestly can't stand having to hit the button twice (and the subsequent additional beeps). I hate it when I hit the button twice (I usually do it quick), but it doesn't read that it was hit twice. Because then I have to do it again. Not only is this annoying, I'm concerned that it may disturb my neighbors late at night because of the additional beeps. I really don't want to take it to the stealer either to pay to have it changed. Grrrr!

The Viper alarm I had on a previous vehicle had chirp silence through the remote, and had a two-way remote & remote start. I would love to install that same model on my runner, if I can figure out how to bypass the factory theft deterrent.

Are you referring to the automatically locking of doors when you shift out of park or reach 12-13mph?

You can disable that feature as well or have it unlock all doors when you shift into park or turn the key from 'On' to 'Acc'.

I don't recall the exact procedure, but for the locking features you would hold down the lock side of the master switch on the driver's door for five seconds and turning the key to 'On' or after it's turned to 'On'. The door locks will cycle. With the transmission in Park, it will set the locks for when you're in taking it out of park. With the transmission in Neutral, it sets it for speed sensitive locking.

Holding the unlock side of the master switch, it will set the unlocking mode. In Park, it unlocks when shifted into park. In Neutral, it unlocks when the key is turned to 'Acc' from 'On'.

Repeating the steps will enable the feature if it's disabled, or disable it if it's enabled. The locking features are independent of each other, you can enable and disable which ever or all modes.

Since you guys live in the idyllic towns of the US where you can leave your doors unlocked. How about just taking the doors off all together. If you guys are so lazy to push a button, how do you get the effort to pull on the handle?

That beep is not loud enough to be heard inside...but those lights now they are bright maybe you should unplug them!

Threads like this are just stupid IMO.

Go to the dealer if you want it done.

The beep is a programmable feature. If it it bugging your neighbors see if they'll chip in to have it reprogrammed. Just keep in mind when you think you have it locked and it isn't because you turned off the beep, don't think Toyota is at fault because all of your stuff was taken.

I think we all have preferences but I think Toyota did a pretty good job accommodating everyone.

The "master switch" is the lock/unlock button on the driver's door, correct?

Look in your owner's manual. There is a simple procedure to follow you can do to program this. I did this is about 30 seconds (including reading the manual) in my garage.

small side note, I like the feature of it arming/locking again after disarming, and walking away--distracted by a neighbor. 5 minutes later I realised it may be unlocked and was happy to figure this out. My neighbor had a Lexus and explained it in detail.
