Took an X5 4.4 without trying

Pulling out of the toll booth, this blue 4.4 is on my right and I hear his engine roaring and Im just watching him in my mirror cause I had more then half the pedal, dude was really tryin to get ahead of me I let him cause I had a Volvo infront of me and traffic was all around so my path was blocked but if I was alone I would have shown him.

I thought 4.4 had more balls, he was tryin way to hard to pass me

I don't think a 4.4 X5 will run with a 4.7 4R. I messed with them quite a bit with my last SUV, & smoked them pretty easily. I even played with a 4.6 [major $], and outran it handily. The 4.6 would be a close race with a 4.7 4R, might even outrun us, but the 4.4s [stock] will not run with us. :bandito:

The guy knew I was messing with him cause I let off the gas and then he passed me and he did 1 of those pedal to the floor pull away fast and cut through traffic, I don't get that I guess it's like a ricer fly by kinda.

The 4.6 is nice, test drove 1 then got the chance to drive 1 for a day, I don't know it does not seem as fast as they advertise it, I know it's fast but I thought it was faster, just seems like it is not taking advantage of all it's power at the right time like they geared it wrong, I got on the highway several times and it did not get up to 80 like I thought it would, a freakin blazer passed me, that was a let down.

When I had my Pathfinder I played with a 4.6 in the city, every light we took off the and 4.6 pulled maybe half a car length ahead, I don't know maybe his 22inch chrome wheels slowed him down, even my friend in his Escalade next to me put his window down and was like WTF.

I still get a 4.8 but my friends father traded a 4.4 for a QX4 and he said the Infiniti is hands down better all around and faster

Are you guys sure?? Those X5 4.4 and 4.6 are pretty fast. I know that the X5 4.6 goes to 60 mph in less than 6.5 seconds...X5 4.4 can't be that far behind. About the only SUVs that can beat the X5 4.4/4.6 consistently are Infiniti FX45 and Porsche Cayenne...and maybe the Caddy.

The 4.6 has a 35 horse advantage on the 4.4 & is quite a bit faster. My ride @ the time is no longer in production, thus is irrelevent, but I did outrun the 4.6; it was much quicker than 4.4s I had run.

I think EDGE hit it in gearing. I've not driven a 4.6, but have driven several 4.4s. For a good while, I thought it mite be my next vehicle. They've got power, but it's pipey power, gotta rev the peewater out of it to make it run. It either needs different ratios, or a good dose of torque. Powerband is quite narrow, not logical for its typical driver.

From actual road experience, I do not THINK a 4.4 [the "282" HP] will outrun a 4.7 4R. Maybe in magazines. I think the 4.6 would.

Didn't somebody here mention that their parents had a 4.4? :satan:

The 4.6 is pretty fast. But I enjoyed the 2.5XT Suburu Forester. I think that Forester would take out the 4.4,4.6 and maybe even the FX45.

That guy obviously did not know how to drive his BMW then. Whoever says the 4.6L BMW X5 is slower than a 4.7L 4-Runner needs to wake up. The 4.6L is fast, it was designed for the higher speeds. Our 4-Runners aren't designed for red light races or extreme high speeds. COG is too high, steering is too light, stability for high speeds just isn't there. The X5s have a completely different design criteria.

I'm not bashing the 4-Runner, hell, I just got mine after driving an Audi A4 for 3 years. But you have to put things in perspective, a 4-Runner will not keep up with a sport-bred X5.

Yes, Burnin M did say a 4.4. I said a 4.6, in reference to Extex's post.

But overall in the real world, the X5 will break away and lead, especially if you throw in some curves.

But if you are talking strictly red-light racing, the nice torque band of the 4.7V8 and quick shifting 5-spd. auto of the 4-Runner is a great combination to have. If I could justify the extra cash I would have gotten the V8, but the deals in NY state sucked for leasing to begin with, and the residual is even worse on a v8 than a v6.

After seeing that the 4.6i is 6.2, you're rite - it would smoke a 4R.
I did not realize they were that quick. I only have 20 seconds of experience with the 4.6i, and I wasn't even ridin' in it! I do, however, think the 4.7 4R will outrun the 4.4i 0-60. I'm not talking the brand new 315 HP; the '00-'03 282 HP, which are 99% of the V8s you see.

I'm not sure where your reference to "extreme high speed" came from. We're talking 60 miles an hour here. If an SUV ride is over 75 mph, count me out. You mentioned thowing in some curves & breaking away & leading....Huh? Who's roadracing? If we're gonna roadrace, I'm swapping rides! No kidding the x5 would outhandle the 4R, they handle like a razor blade, for an SUV; wanna get muddy?

We're just STS about 0-60 times. As far as 4R not being made for that, I disagree. 4R is a wide ranging, hi-performance machine. How could I depend on it to get me to the top of a steep, muddy grade, if it's incapable of surviving a 0-60 sprint? I want to know anything I drive. Much better to find out @ a redlite, than go tumbling.

BURNIN M - Thanks for the times. The two that surprised me were the BMW 4.6i [!] & the S/C 4R! Man does that pick it up or wot? What does it do to the torque number? I'm gonna watch your project. I came out of a 5.9GC, 5.63.

the 0-60 on the 3.4 was 9.1 and with the sc it dropped down to around 6.7 i think, not sure.

My dad has an 03 X5 4.4i and my mom has an 04 X5 4.4i. The 2004 is a heck of a lot faster than the 2003. I have driven both of them. I think the 4Runner stands a chance against the 2003 4.4i. I sometimes follow my mom because we leave the same time, and when she floors it, she gains some distance on me. I have my pedal 1/2 - 3/4 of the way down. I will have to do some experimenting!!!

The 3rd gen 4runners ('96-'02) with the 3.4L V6 can go from 0-60 in about 9.5-10.5 seconds...most tests show around 10.0 seconds. It ain't no speedster!

I believe one of the big differences between the '03 and '04 besides the hike in HP is "I believe" the '03 is a 4-speed and I know the '04 is a 5-speed. If that is the case the gearing alone would make a big difference in how the x5 put the power to the ground.
