I'm thinking about redoing my socket set, and thinking about getting some of these. Craftsman 19 Pc Inch and Metric Wrench Set: Get Your Grip at Sears

Does anyone have them? What do we think? :reddance:

I've had that set. The ratchet leaves a lot to be desired though. Most craftsman ratchets do though. Look at the easy read sockets. They're good for the money. Do you have a budget?

the kobalt set at lowes is laser etched for easy reading, has color coded sockets (blue for metric, red for fractional), a more polished finish and a high tooth count (72 = 5 degrees per click). Kobalt has the same over-the-counter warranty for breakage and goes one step further - if you register when you buy the set, they'll mail you individual replacement sockets for the cost of S&H if you ever LOSE one (or two or five...).

I'll probably pick up a set when I have some money to drop on it. Right now, the hand-me down and harbor freight set I have is adequate, but some of the features I mentioned above would be a nice upgrade.

I don't really have a set budget I guess around $150, I'm not really looking at replacing my ratchets I have 2 sets of older craftsman that work fine. More looking at sockets. If there's a deal that come with a ratchet I'm not going to throw it out. Also I'm looking at metric, I pretty much only work with metric so thats what I want to replace. For some odd reason I haven't lost a hole lot of standard sockets.

I'l have to check in to Kolbalt. I like the idea of replacing lost sockets.

Kobalt sockets are pretty good for the $$$. I do have a Kobalt ratchet too. I guess I'm spoiled though. I have a snap-on 3/8 ratchet and I will not pick up another! I have a blue point 1/4 ratchet and even it blows the craftsman and Kobalt away

This is what I bought a little while back to keep in the truck. The sockets are the same style to what you're looking at. I think this is an 85 piece set.

Lowes is great about thier Kobalt sets. I didn't want a bunch of different boxes or sets of tools so I got these for $80. It has everything you need for the road except for allen wrenches. Comes in a flat canvas zipper pouch, so it doesn't take any space at all.

I have a mega set of Craftsman sockets, wrenches, etc, but also have Kobalt and others.

Regardless of brand, treat yourself to the laser etched. You're going to have these for a while and your eys will appreciate the readability down the road.

I have a lot of nice tools, mostly Snap-On. But the laser etched would be so nice to have. When I used tools and bought my stuff I was better than 20/20. Now that I have 'grown up' I find myself squinting for the size even with my glasses. Sucks getting older, but beats the alternative, lol. It doesn't matter much to guys that are using them daily, they know at a glance the size. For a weekend wrencher like me, well it would be great to have the etching.

f**k craftsman. used to be good. now are chinese crap junk. they're what I've had for 30+ years. dread it when I have to replace one because the new stuff is awful. ratchets are hinky.
buy husky from Home Depot.

Yeah, growing up is tough. I'll never get old, just older. :cheers: I've also found times when the light is lees than good on the trail or when underneath the rig or in other situations and the laser etching come in handy in those situations.

I'll think I'm going to go with Kolbalt I have to look into it but I like the idea of replacing lost sockets and Lowe's is closer to my house the HD. I don't really like there sets but I might be able to make something work.

I had a Bluepoint set I really liked but after a career change I wasn't going to have access to the Snapon man so I sold.

I have a 100-ish piece set from Husky I bought about 12 or 13 years ago that has never let me down. It has all the popular sizes in 3/8 and 1/4 drive, both short and extended. I've worked on everything from cars, yard equipment, stuff around the house, etc., and never really needed more. I've had to buy a few special sized sockets over the years (less than 5 total), but the $$ I saved in not going with some mega-set has been worth it.

The no questions asked lifetime guarantee is also nice. I broke the 3/8 ratchet once (my stupidity, not the tool's fault) and just went to the nearest HD and swapped it for a new one. Take a look and see for yourself.

Kobalt is made by JS Products and Husky is made by four different suppliers: Western Forge, Stanly Black and Decker, Apex Tool Group and Iron Bridge Tools.
