My avatar shows it near top speed in 4th gear. This picture was taken by me using my cell phone, I might have let off a little, or just bounced the governor cuz it looks about 112, but I remember it getting almost all the way past the "MPH" thinking "is this thing gonna stop?". If the scale stays calibrated past 110 then its at least one full 5 mph increment past 110 into the "mph" sign. Definitely not drag limited, it was still pulling pretty hard at the governor.

You can have the ECU reprogrammed for more mph, but 4wd trucks are not meant for speed.

Can this be done at the dealership or is it an aftermarket thing?

I realize our tires aren't rated for speeds above 117mph, so pushing that limit would be dangerous.

Still.....just knowing we could do it (with the correct speed rated tires) would be nice.
 
Personally I have no urge, need, want or desire to go over about 90 in this thing... It just isn't designed for it. In a vehicle like this a slight bump in the road is all it takes to lose control.

If you want to go fast, buy a sportbike. For $8k you can buy a bike that will take you over 150 easily right off the showroom floor. Not that it's technically safe, but at least the bike was designed to go that fast.

After I took my FZ1 to 150 I very quickly put a sale sign on it and got rid of it. That was just too damned fast. :awais:
 
thanks for the responses.

i was reading an article that said the lr3 can cruise comfortably at 130mph and was curious how the 4runner would compare.

i have had my maxima at 135 (with a little room to go) and it does not seem to have that much more pull than the 4runner at those higher speeds.
 
I do agree with all who say 115 is fast enough for the 4Runner. Most will never be in an area to even remotely see those numbers.

I too have had a CBR1000RR and a S2000, both of which I pushed to their limits on safe/perfect conditions.

I also lived in Germany for 4 years, commuting on the Autobahn, and understand a bit more about the dangers of speed and reaction time/following distances. Something many drivers here in the U.S. don't comprehend, until it is too late.

I was just curious because there are mods for just about everything! I've read into this further and as KOZ says, it is the ECU that gets modified, usually a new chip installed.

I would agree that its not designed to cruise 100+ MPH, but during my top speed trial I was VERY suprised at the 4Runners stability at 110+ mph. It didn't feel floaty or unsafe to me at all, it still felt pinned down and responding to the contours of the road nicely. Except for the excessive wind noise I wouldn't have any problem cruising on the autobahn (not that I've ever been on the autobahn, but...) in this thing, as long as it was equipped with the right tires. I bet it could hit 130+ in the right conditions with no governor...
 
I'd rather take off fast and get up to speed than have any need to go faster that 115mph. I want SRT8 type power!!! We all have dreams don't we??

There is no such thing as TOO FAST! :D

I've had my 6 month old 4Runner over 100 MPH a few times and even hit the speed governor once or twice. It was very stable compared to other vehicles at that speed (way better than a P.O.S. 1996 Chevy Blazer @ 95MPH :cool: ).

I had an old Corolla that was clocked at over 123MPH and still accelerating once (no ticket from the cop who clocked me... long story :p ).

In a friends 1997 Mustang GT we did about 155MPH once. WAY COOL (if you know what you are doing and are on a track or closed road).

Do I wish my 4Runner was faster... SURE.
Do I drive it like a sports care... NO.

Speed kills if you don't know the limitations of yourself and your vehicle. Of course most people don't know where the edge is because they've never pushed it.

You can't know the limit until you hit it!

I can tell you that the 4Runner (with XREAS) is extremely stable cruising at 100+ mph. I was amazed at how car-like it is and being able to set the cruise control at those speeds, even on long sweeping freeway turns.

On the other hand you would be surprised at how the stability could possibly change with a minimal increase in speed. No one loves speed more then me but I don

I don't think anyone can argue with that logic... ;):

Let's just hope that most of us survive the limit when we hit it.

Don't get me wrong. Once you get sportbike in your blood you can't get it out. I just took an extended hiatus from it. I'll have another when the timing is right.

I just didn't want my 6 year old to grow up wondering who I was.

There are two limits that are most important; the limits of the bike and the limits of the person riding it. If either one is passed it can get ugly!

I am pretty sure that the govener kicks in at 115 I got mine to 113 and was pulled over. The 4runner seemed very stable but the govener did not kick in at 113 and I have read it kicks in at 115.
 
I have an '05 Sport V8 4x4. I'm not sure exactly how fast I have gone, but I think it wasn't over 100, and even then for just a split second and then I let off the gas.

My '05 Sport is MUCH more stable than my '00 Sport. The Xtreas is just a blessing, but the truth is that the 4th generation model in general is much more stable. I hated driving my '00 past 70mph, but my '05 begs you to go faster than 70. However, I have really noticed that my fuel economy drops noticeably past 70mpg.

I also have an '05 BMW 545i with the Sport Package. Talk about fast and furious. I have driven about 135 mph with PLENTY of room to go faster, and it was so dang stable, you didn't even think that you were going that fast.

If I want to drive fast, I drive the BMW. Otherwise, my 4Runner is great in its own right.

Besides, I used to never get tickets. With the BMW, I got 2 tickets within 4 months. Now it stays in the garage 80% of the time.:)
