Torn between a 4runner and tundra

Ive been looking at these options for a couple weeks now, My wife has a 2016 4runner SR5 and I love it. I love trucks too thats why I was looking at a tundra and I test drive one a few days ago and really liked it(2016 Tundra SR5 off road). I was over at tundras.com and reading some posts and even some of them went from the tundra to a 4runner.

If I get a 4runner it would be the Trail or Offroad.

Its a daily commuter and I know the 4runner gets a little better MPG.

I don't really need either but I want both lol. all I do is go to the shooting range a good bit, drive some back roads and sometimes drive through fields at my parents

I was in the same situation a couple of months ago. I thought I wanted a tundra as my next vehicle for years. I was coming from an 02 4runner. I drove a few tundras but they just didn’t feel right for me. I knew going with a tundra I would want to put a shell on it to haul the dogs, tools and such. The more I thought about it the 4runner met my needs better as a daily driver with a family and hobbies the 4runner was a better choice for me.

- Guns are better stored inside the vehicle for security I'd think. WV I don't known their gun transport laws.
- Unless your roads are very narrow or you do tricky offroading neither matter and both will do well.
- Driving through fields a locker would be nice if they get muddy
- Your wife has a 4runner. His and her 4r's? eh.. Just drive hers when you get the itch.

So you're right kinda split. Get the truck it has a V8 and WAAAAAAY more power = Fun.
Plus you can tow something the two or three times you might need to. Just get a cover/cab so you don't have to help people move big things.

Works very well to store my rifles and hidden.

Better off road platform

Great in all weather conditions

Better gas

Not as long for daily commuter. Parking Tundra is a PIA in dense areas.

I drove a Tundra and it was really too big for me and with the gas mileage, I thought the 4Runner would be better. Glad I bought the 4Runner. Got the TRD Offroad Premium edition and it is really nice.

How about a domestic truck. They are that good these days. Can't imagine buying a Tundra and I like Toyota (own 3 4x4 Toyotas at the moment and I like my full size domestic truck more for daily truck type stuff). Toyota is simply 15 years behind. Many full size domestics will get better mpg than the 4r and tow 10k.... They are kicking Toyota's rear in that class. The Toyota still has a very slight edge on reliability.. but its basically a wash at this point.

Had a 2014 trail, now driving a 2016 Tundra off road. 4runner is better in every aspect...other than not having a bed. It has just enough car like qualities with just the right amount of truck capabilities. Can drive it in NYC and on class 4 roads of VT. Tundra is a gas sucking beast that parks like the titanic. Don't like taking it to the market never mind a city. Truck is too wide if the road gets narrow.

What do I like about the tundra? Imagine the interior of the 4runner that has been widened by a foot....along with a 6.5 food bed. Hauling lumber, manure, trash is all easy now. I can have my dog in the back seat while moving a lazy-boy, rather than leaving him behind (an making a second trip to get him) because I had to put the seats down in the 4runner. If you don't need the size and the bed, the 4runner is a better choice.

I don’t know about. They might outsale Toyota but that’s mostly due to low selling price and some nicer features. Just got rid of 2012 f150 and it was junk and took a beating on trade in. If I had bought a tundra probably would have broke even between oringal selling price vs repair costs + trade in.

Sad part is the issues I had on mine are still prevalent on new ones. That’s what call “smart engineering “ to design crap so the dealer can make a mint on repairs.

Well, I have never owned a Ford. They may be garbage.... I've had almost 0 issues with chevy trucks and I don't treat them well... lots of towing and miles plus almost no maintenance besides the basics.

My vote is for a pickup, simply cause you already have a 4Runner in the family. Or a C6 vette. Mix it up haha.

I went from a Dodge Dually to a Tundra, then less than 4 months traded for a 4Runner.

Dodge diesel 4x4 4dr got 15-17mpg, 12mpg towing my 43ft 5th wheel. Tundra got 12.8mpg unloaded. Only took a road trip to El Paso before that thirsty thing was gone. I LOVE my 4Runner. Not the best mpg but it does what I want it to.

If I was in the market again I'd look at a gas 3/4 4x4 Dodge. Usually lots left over and the hemi is a good motor. People badmouth Dodge but after the interior got redone with input from Mercedes it's nice. Rebates right now are pretty good.

My buddy bought a Tundra about a month before I bought my 4Runner. It's a nice rig, but for the money the 4Runner is nicer.

My complaint about Tundras... I need legroom for the 2nd row. I can't get a Tundra with good legroom in the back (a crewmax) AND a standard or long bed... If Toyota made a crewmax with a standard bed I might buy one.

I had a tundra before I had the 4runner, and I loved the Tundra, until the moment I had to park it.

Full size pickups are a PITA if you live in the city. If I lived in the burbs, I probably still would have my tundra.

Otherwise, the 4runner is more liveable in the city in every imaginable way, except when you have to go to home depot for home improvement supplies.

If your wife didn't already have a 4Runner then I would say that it's the clear winner here, but I don't see any reason to have two. I have not owned a Tundra myself, but my father and a few friends have and I would take any of the domestic 1/2-ton trucks over it and that's saying a lot seeing how much I despise Chevrolet/GMC/GM.

We currently have a TRD Pro 4Runner and a Ram 2500 Power Wagon. The PW has the bigger 6.4L Hemi that makes over 400HP/torque and even with 37's I can still eek out 16mpg+ on the highway, the Tundra can't do that stock lol. The 6.4L is a well vetted motor that has proven extremely reliable over time.

I think you should get a truck simply to diversify your fleet, but take a hard look at the domestic trucks before you bite on the Tundra.

FYI: The Power Wagon comes with the big 6.4L Hemi V8, front and rear electronic lockers, electronic disconnecting front sway-bar, a 12,000lb Warn winch, 33" Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs, manual shift t-case and 4.10 gears stock. I bought it over another diesel because it's basically a 3/4-ton Rubicon truck and it fit the bill of a built platform out of the box and for the money better than anything else in it's class. BTW, it fits 37's stock with just a little trimming. :wow:

We have two 4runners . They fit our needs. They are easy to park and carry things. Both are Trd offroads. I wanted rear lockers.

Thanks, so far she's been great. Like most people say, I too sorta wish it were a diesel, but Ram has stated a million times why they don't offer it with the Cummins and it makes a lot of sense. Now I think they could tinker with the idea of putting the Eco Diesel in there and hopping it up a bit with a tune, but what do I know?!

I traded my 16 Tundra DC (with the smaller V-8) for a 17 4Runner. Didn't really need a truck and the fuel mileage is horrible
