Torquing on Acceleration and Deceleration

2000 Toyota 4Runner torques on acceleration and deceleration.... most noticeable when above 50mph... torques to the right when accel, to the left when letting off the pedal.... replaced upper and lower ball joints figuring that might be the issue at 160k miles on truck.... didn't help. all suspension parts appear in good shape... it feels like an axle issue? it's a limited slip diff and it has been making some pinion gear whirl in the past.... I have used the truck to pull a 3500lb boat a few times over the last few summers.... ideas?

Motor mounts look good.... Transmission mounts look good... Do not believe there is an upper control arm for the back wheels... just an axle??? not sure to what you are referring?????? steering rack bushings seem fine... got a pic of stabilizer bar bushing that looks toast? I find it hard to believe this could be the problem of so much torque? feels like something is BROKEN it's torquing so much.... but maybe it is just this????

aaaaahhh, ok... well, I call a technical... referred to them in manual as suspension arms for rear but see what you are saying now with the provided link.... the control arms/suspension arms for the rear look good! ALL suspension stuff looks good other than the bushing for front stabilizer bar as noted in pic...

For additional info, this problem became very noticeable when pulling 3500lb boat once I paid attention to the counter steering I was doing to keep the boat from swaying behind the truck. It started to be a chore! There was not an "AAHA" moment or any "OMG, what just happened, or any sounds that made me think about it... i just slowly started noticing it and paid attention to how I was unconsciously reacting.... when came back from trip with boat, did notice OIL all over rear window.... looking back, possibly just a totally different issue that I resolved by having a "shop" figure out since I didn't have the time.... figured it was all related to the torquing but they merely replace rear diff. oil seal and added oil and said it was fine (obviously didn't take for test drive but most likely have done what I have done and another shop has done that suggested lower and upper ball joints {although they did take for test drive and suggested lowers definitely} - and that is, got underneath and looked around, swung from suspension parts :-)

This just seems to be a hidden problem? since I'm obviously dumb to this issue I'll explain it as a sorta gyroscopic effect... there's no problems when braking... it seems totally dependent on acceleration and deceleration which to me points towards driveline... maybe it is some hidden suspension part crack or something that is expanding under load but from looking under truck while on ground it all looks normal. Would imagine with wheels off ground things are suspended differently and maybe that would show something but per shop, nothing seemed unusual.... is it possible that a past pinion bearing noise (whirl) that doesn't seem as loud now or possibly I've grown somewhat used to it was a precursor to some axle issue I might be having now? that the oil seal was possibly ruined do to something not spinning around tightly in the differential or axles? Seems to drive fine and not exhibit any noise or other issues other than this stupid torquing which honestly is sorta dangerous... definitely no hauling boat til this is fixed... thanks for the ideas and help so far... keep scratching your brains! :-)

I still think it has something to do with the rear control arms. This issue has happened to me twice and both times it was control arm related. 1st time was a broken UCA and the last time the nut loosened up on the LCA bolt.

Also check to make sure the welds on the control arm mounts aren't cracked

I've checked, rechecked and triple checked... no broken welds, no cracks, no loose bolts, no ruined bushings besides the one in the pic... I agree it seems like a suspension issue.... I agree it feels like something broken, and I may have to keep looking and eventually it will be found but as of now, ALL suspension parts look in good order.... :-(

Wouldn't there be issues with braking and the truck torquing as well if it were a suspension part? I've tried lifting both sides of the rear axle with a jack and letting the jack fall rapidly to see if I notice anything unusual as the weight gets put on the suspension... still nothing... remember as well, 2 shops have looked under the truck on a lift and found nothing very unusual....

baffled

possibly a worn spring?!?! is that possible? Put new shocks and struts a year ago and didn't notice anything... all springs look in good shape.... none overly rusted... do not notice any cracks or breaks...

Since I can't find anything else, how about wheel bearings!? Anyone think that could be causing this? Gonna wiggle wheels and see if I feel anything but I've not done them before on this truck and would figure the previous owner would have had that done when did brakes before I bought it 50k miles ago...

Looking in manual it says these are permanently sealed.... but does say can be done by automotive shop.... do these need to be messed with or what? just did the lower ball joints and asked if I should do this and no one answered this... knew there was something about the steering knuckle disassembly that had to do with the bearings... guess I will have to do some reading on this here... sigh

I am having the same issue with mine and it is getting worse. I drove one side of rear up a loading ramp and can tell the Link arm(suspension arm/ control arm or what ever you want to call it) bushings are toast. It is only noticable when one side is compressed and the other side is not. Just looking at them while vehicle is sitting in natural state on driveway or on lift did not expose this and they seemed fine. It was only when one side was compressed and other was not. I also noted that my transmission mount is wore pretty good and also likely to contribute to the problem.

welp, y'all are right... I finally found it! had to look hard to see inside the control arm pivot points at the bushings but yep, one definitely looks SHOT! Thank you so much for insisting to keep looking at suspension stuff in the rear... the aha moment finally happened... :bravo:

next question... what do I look for to replace this? I've gone to autozone and napa websites and have tried suspension arm and control arm and am getting NOTHING but front suspension stuff.... :-( Would think there is some sorta of kit to maybe replace both sides?
