Total Eclipse

Not expecting a ton of replies but figured it's worth asking. Is anyone trying to make their way into the path of totality for the August 21 solar eclipse?

I plan to drive down from Seattle, which I'm certain is going to be a shitshow with thousands of people converging on the area. But figured with the 4Runner, perhaps I can find a service road to get to and just camp on. May consider driving down in the middle of the night Sunday morning, finding a good spot in a random location along the path of totality and then camping Sunday night in order to view it Monday morning.

If anyone knows of any good roads that I could peel off onto to get a spot to camp (any lodging/camping has been booked out for years already), let me know! I'm not familiar at all with that area but figure if I can stay away from the town-centers, I'll have better luck finding a spot to grab. Any ideas? Anyone else planning to try something similar?

Once I get my Ochoco NF map from USFS, I'll put in more details of where I plan on being, but I'd welcome some company. Any ideas and suggestions from locals are certainly welcome though!
 
I'm planning to head into the Ochoco from Portland, if the fire danger isn't bad.

I'm still hunting a backup. I'm definitely curious to hear about other spots within a few hours from I-5. I poked around a bit in the Siuslaw under the path but didn't find many options for dispersed camping that had visibility through the forest canopy.

Unfortunately, I a) don't know anything about finding service roads/fire roads/off road areas that are okay for parking a vehicle to camp in in general and b) don't know anything about the area near Ochoco anyway. That's why I'm also hoping for some insider knowledge on either end.

I figure worst case I'll just drive down there and wing it and hope I don't get run off by someone with a shotgun or something. Hell, I wouldn't mind if I just had to pull off on a shoulder somewhere and sleep there. I also don't mind having to hike a couple miles from wherever base camp gets set up to the "totality" areas.

I just want to see the damn eclipse while it's so close by! Everything else is merely a secondary concern.

Figure bring water, an electric skillet to plug in to the 4R, folding table, chair, tent and some easy meals and I'll be golden.

The NF motor vehicle use maps are a good starting place to find a spot. The roads you can officially camp on are marked. There's a ton of area.

i've pegged 2 dispersed campsites as sites to try, but idk about forest canopy. gonna have to try to dig a little more.

you wanna hook up sunday night through monday? if you are able to get to the location early on sunday that'll be good too, in case the area is overrun with tourists like me. i'll be doing a lot of driving on sunday to get up there so i don't anticipate getting to Ochoco until late afternoon/early evening.

I plan on going to Lincoln City for the eclipse. You can drive on the beach there. I too expect heavy crowds and traffic. I heard that some parks are renting parking spaces to camp in.
 
I'm in Tacoma (well just outside) and was kind of thinking the same thing. If I can get that Monday off I would really enjoy heading down there with you guys!
 
Unfortunately, I just accepted a new job so I won't be able to utilize vacation time like I thought to go down there :(
 
I was thinking that if I can't get down to OR, I would try to get out on the beach at Ocean Shores area and watch it on the sands..
 
you guys would know better than me, but i've read the coastal areas will be the most crowded, so i'm avoiding them. add to that chances of cloud cover are greater on the coast.

i'm still planning on being in ochoco NF if you guys wanna go. i will be swinging through Bend after the eclipse to pick up a roof top tent :)
