Am I missing something? Cant you you just measure the size of the hole in the mount and then measure the ball's shank at the auto parts store?

I guess it could be measured. It means I have to dig it out in cold garage. I thought people who tow would know, since they had to buy it.

I believe it is a 1" Shank width. If it is not 1" it is 1 1/4" inch. The "Toyota" Hitch insert came with an adapter for smaller diameter shanks. It's like a bushing. It can be hard to find say a 1 7/8" ball with a 1" shank. Just bring the receiver insert in the store with you and test fit.

The hitch (the part where the ball connects to)..the only thing standard on them is the size of the end that slips into the receiver. There are 2 standard sizes.

Class I and Class II are 1-1/4" x 1-1/4".
Class III and Class IV are 2" x 2".

Toyota puts a Class III receiver on if you get the Toyota tow package.

Depending on the manufacturer and style will determine what size ball can fit. I own three different hitches...All three have different size ball shafts. The diameter of all three are the same, but the lengths are different.

What size hitch ball is going to determined by what hitch you have. They are NOT all the same.
