my 08 SE v6 didn't come with a hitch, which one should i add? would rather have the kind that fits into the 'slotted' rear bumper cover (with the backup sensors), which i have to replace anyways.

nope, the first owner when bought new just didn't add that option as far as i know. the rear bumper has the backup sensors and i want to be sure the replacement has those too...unless they all have that..

I've been meaning to write this up for a while, and I still will, I installed a hitch into my '08 since It didn't come with one.
Essentailly, many of the brands are the same as noted from their corportate page link here. If you want the slotted one, you have to get it off a junkyard runner or from the dealer. You also will need to either cut the bumper, or replace it completely. After markets sit right below the bumper, actually touching it.
You likely already have a trailer harness and plug under the drivers side frame rail at the rear of the vehicle located near the tow hook. If you don't have that, you'l need to get one.
IMO cheap works for me and what I tow. I wasn't concerned about the possibility of losing 1 degree of departure angle with the hitch on there.

My 07 SE didn't come with one and it wasn't a rental. It didn't come with a spoiler either.

Beginning in 2006, the hitch was optional on V6 models.
AFAIK, only the hitch and ball mount was missing without the option.
The 7-pin harness is still mounted on the rear cross member, even the pigtail harness for brake controller is in the glove box. Larger front brake rotors, 13.3", are found on all Sport Edition and some Limited models. All SR5s have the smaller front rotors, 12.6". The transmission cooler is internal to the radiator on the V6. The V8 has an auxiliary transmission cooler near the driver side.

Yeah, I still had the wiring harness and the extra connector in the glove box, just not a factory hitch. I added one later.

I prefer the factory/stock hitch over the aftermarket hitches because it seem none of the aftermarket hitches fit/hide inside that tow hitch slot on the rear bumper cover and that's what i strongly prefer... instead of below it. i don't really plan on towing anything anytime soon, just like how it looks. i may get a boat down the road, but nothing big to worry about the weight, etc. so, im wondering where i can get the factory hitch that works with the rear bumper cover w/ hitch slot. I have to replace my rear bumper cover anyways (minor damage), so was gonna go ahead and get the slot cover just not sure where to get the hitch to go with it.
My v6 07 SE came with a hitch and a connector for the trailer lights, no transmission oil cooler, I installed an aftermarket transmission cooler, maybe the V-8s came with an transmission oil cooler, as my Tundra has one...

My 2009 V6 SR5 has OEM 17" wheels, so therefore would it have the larger brakes?

I have an OEM hitch that attaches to the rear crossmember that I might be selling soon. It is on my 2009 V6 SR5. As we speak I am tracking down an OEM V8 frame hitch for my purposes, so once I get it, I will be removing my hitch and selling it. I can't give you an exact time frame just yet, but I can keep you posted on availability if you like. BTW, I'm not sure what you mean by the backup sensors.
My OEM 2009 hitch is in perfect condition. I live in Arizona, so no corrosion.

oh is the 09 the same for the 08 OEM hitch? can i see a photo of yours?

I don't work for Toyota or anything, but from what I have observed, all the OEM V6 hitches are the same. They look like this, attach to the rear crossmember, and as you can see, fit in the slot in the rear bumper.

No, the SR5s all came with the smaller 12.6" rotors, though many SR5s came with the optional 17" rims.
