Tow strap/Recovery strap??

We lost a good friend of mine about 10 yrs ago to a chain and hitch going through the rear cab of his chevy annd hitting him on the head. Ill never forget that sight and wouldnt wish for anyone else to see it either. Their is a proper way to use a recovery or tow strap with a receiver hitch it should be wrapped to where if it did come loose it would hit the ground and not pull straight out also a jacket or blanket should be laid over the strap to dampen things if it does come loose

not to give you a hard time, but but of genuine curiosity does that happen? I've never seen it happen or heard of it.

Happened to me? Nope. But this picture comes up time and time again.

Try this method next time if you must go without a proper recovery point

I keep the TJM HD kit in the truck: TJM OX RECOVERY KIT HEAVY DUTY

3 straps, snatch block, d-rings etc..

Yeah, you'd need some rear spacers but they are cheap and you can piece together a kit.



Yeah, probably should get a proper D ring. I've never had to use it for a serious recovery and IDK first hand, but I'd imagine that the ball would be relatively stout.

I've used it once as a tow point. i got stuck in the snow before the lift and tires, and a guy with an f-350 offered to pull me out. i would never do it again, his ball was fine, but i actually bent the pin and had to cut it to get it out....no thanks.

Be careful with that. Using the trailer ball as a recovery point is terribly dangerous.

if its going to be just a smooth steady pull, using the ball is fine. but if there will be any yanking/snatching or any momentum built up before the strap gets tight...using the ball is a very bad idea. they aren't designed to take those kinds of loads.

ive used the pin through the strap as shown above with good results. usually if im in a hurry, and don't feel like digging the d-ring mount out of the tool box.



to the OP, I prefer 30' straps. you just never know what situation you'll get into, and you can always do something with the extra strap, if its too long.

but, get into a spot, and the 10' end up being 5' too short? you can just make it longer...

I carry 3+ 30' straps, and 4-5 d-rings. there have been times, where we've had to connect several straps together...

you can loop through the d-ring and back to the vehicle, affectively cutting the length in half.
also, depending on the bumper type, you may be able to just wrap it around. whatever it takes to shorten it.

but, its easier to make it shorter, than it is to lengthen it

I would but I have no clue how to install it and everyone says they are SO easy, well somewhere a thread I read said once you take the tire off and you find the "whatever piece it was" if you don't know what that piece is then put the tire back on. I would take the tire off and say wtf do you think your doing???????

I bought this 20' snatch strap a few weeks ago, wanted to try it due to the low price. Maybe you'd be interested too. Have yet to try it out though but seems to be of pretty good quality for the price.
