Towing 4runner V8 vs 3 gen Tacoma V6

My wife is looking at a 17 Tacoma double cab v6 and i currently have 07 4runner v8. Wondering which one would tow more comfortably? We currently tow a 22 foot pontoon
with a weight of around 3500lbs. Tacoma has the longer wheel base, but for 4runner has more torque.

Yours with a set of air bags will do just fine

Have a buddy with an 18 Taco with the V6 and it's honestly horrible for towing.

Absolutely gutless below 3k RPM and constantly hunts for gears. He's only towing about a 18' Fiberglass cruiser.

100% the V8 will be better. Throw in some airbags and you're golden.

I say throw on the stiffest rear OME coils and towing will be really nice with the v8.

We plan to use the 4runner to tow a camper. Going to get a Hensley Hitch.

The geometry / math behind the Hensley essentially projects the pivot point of the trailer forward. It's like having a longer wheelbase vehicle, which removes the only concern with towing for the 4runner. It's expensive, but much less expensive than a tow-only vehicle, etc.

I pull a 3500 lb (loaded) Rpod (about 20 feet long) with my V8 Sport 4runner, and it's rock solid stable at any legal speed. I have a sliding friction bar stabilizer on it, and no swaying or tracking problems at all. I do have heavy duty OME 896 rear springs which eliminate rear sag.

The Hensley hitch is a cool idea, but it would be overkill for a light trailer like mine.

I've towed with a gx460 and a 3rd gen Tacoma. Personally I prefer to tow with the Tacoma because of the longer wheelbase. I have the OvTune on the Tacoma, so I don't find it a problem towing. I'm typically towing a 3800lbs trailer.

While i agree that the v8 4runner will take it like a champ, you can win over physics when it comes to swaying of the trailer.
