I'll be towing a 2,000 lb 6x10 cargo trailer across the US to festivals - probably 15-20k miles a year and am considering a 4runner or Pathfinder but can't seem to make up my mind. On hauls, the SUV would mostly be empty accept for 2 people and a mattress, and it would be our only vehicle otherwise. With fuel efficiency, reliability, and towing ability as the main factors, does anyone have advice? I'm also not sure about V6 vs V8 as the trailer weight will only be 2000 lbs so I'm not sure if the less fuel efficient V8 of either vehicle is worth it. Also, I'm trying to find a vehicle with less than 60k miles for less than $15k, and I have no need for 4WD.
More info: I towed this same trailer approximately 25k miles last year with a friend's Dodge Sprinter 2500 that had a 3rd person and additional 1000 lbs of cargo in it, and it struggled badly over any highway passes, as well as those gradual inclines that last forever like Wyoming, which is why I'm getting my own light hauler.
