Towing another 4runner

Hey all! First post in the 3rd gen section. Today I finally got around to bringing my girlfriends 1998 4runner sr5 into the shop that's about 15 ish miles away and I did so by towing it with a uhaul tow dolly and my 2000 4runner! I have to say, while hooking up the tire straps and whatnot, I was thinking wtf am I doing, but all said and done, the runner towed it pretty well with no problems! It was a mostly flat drive. I have stock brakes, 4.30s, 265/75/16s, no external tranny cooler. Tranny temps touched 200 once but stayed at 180 98% of the time.

If anyone was wondering, it is possible. Would I do it long distance, probably not, but if need be, go for it. Just remember to remove your driveshaft.

Just felt like sharing!

The max towing capacity is 5k lbs for the 3.4L 3rd gens. Curb weight is under 4k lbs so if the dolly is under 1k lbs you should be technically okay. Of course could and should are different things. You would also need to drop the rear drive shaft. It would labor on hills. Hopefully the motor and trans would be in good shape and an external trans cooler added.

And if you have 4wd, you can also put it in Low for tough hills, mountain passes.

If an 00-02, you can also start from standing still in Low and 2nd gear, preventing that harsh 1-2 Low shift.

Luck and enjoy those Runners. :cowboy:
