Anyone out there have any idea if a '90 4r with about 150g on it is capable of pulling a small travel trailer? It's a 5 spd and I just did all the timimg belts and tune up and such and it runs well. Have not had any other major probelms so far but may need to put in a new clutch. Don't want to mess with that if it isn't up to the job. What d'ya say? Thanks brothers.:awais:

In 1990, the suspension was changed to IFS up front, and a solid-axle with coil springs out back. This change allowed the creation of a stretched, four-door body style. The new body style is considerably larger inside, and the towing capacity is supposed to be greater.
However, the increased weight and more car-like handling of these trucks, emphasizes the low output of the engine, especially with the four-cylinder. The V6 has slightly more horsepower than the 2.4 liter 4-cylinder and are capable of towing 3500 lbs. If you have taken good care of it, it's quite possible, but you might not see a whole lot of power while towing it.

I knew it was the 3.slo because you said timing belt, (the 22R has a chain), but I didn't know if others reading would know it.
While the truck might? be rated for 3500 lb towing capacity, I'd never do it on any kind of regular basis with that little engine.
And even on a less than regular basis I'd make sure the brakes were in really, really good condition if the trailer doesn't have brakes (which it probably doesn't).
I flat tow my 4runner a few times a year with my Trooper, and that has a much bigger V6 with 225HP and huge disk brakes front and rear. It's rated for 3500 lbs also, but I'd never do it more than a couple of times a year. It's not meant to be a tow vehicle.
