Towing question??

When you are trying to figure out how much your towing weight is do you have to add the people in your runner to the overall weight of the item you are towing?

Like a camper that may weigh 3,000lbs plus the driver and one passenger in the runner for a total of 3,310lbs??

Not for the towing weight capacity, but you do have to consider the weight for not exceeding the vehicles gross weight limit.

The maximum you can tow depends on the total weight of any cargo, occupants and available equipment. 7K lbs. for V8s and 5K lbs. for V6s.

You sure about that Koz? I thought the towing rating was purely the amount of weight the trailer could weigh to be towed safely by the vehicle, excluding the cargo, passengers, etc inside the vehicle. GVWR is the combined weight of the trailer tongue weight plus the vehicle, plus the cargo (for a V6 this would be 5580 = 4300 (weight of 4Runner) + 500 (Max tongue weight) + cargo weight (maximum with trailer of 780 or roughly 4-5 adults)).

The GCWR (which we do not have listed fo the 4Runner) is the combined weight of the vehicle and the towed trailer, but this number is really only tracked in pickups and large commercial trucks.

That came directly from Toyota!

Wow.. That would really reduce the towing capacity of the vehicle... Let's say you have 4 people weighing in around 200 lbs, plus the associated grill, cooler full of beverages, and misc other stuff weighing in around 200 lbs. You have now reduced your towing capacity by 1000 lbs because of the passengers and cargo... So what Toyota is actually saying is that the 4Runner can tow 5000/7000 (V6/V8) without the driver, but when the driver is added that is reduced by the weight of the driver... Maybe they perfected auto-pilot?

As long as you dont exceed GVCWR 12,000 total weight (4Runner + Trailer + cargo, people Etc) you are fine. I found all this out when i bought my 4runner almost 2 years ago. Its in the owners Manual, but 12,000 total for the v8 models.

Lets see, 7K lbs. tow rate and 4530 lbs for the weight of the vehicle. That adds up to 11,530 lbs., what
