I like the integrated 7-Pin Connector. Does it still require me to install a Brake Controller to use electric trailer brakes?

Rev, do you need a brake controller? I have a Tekonsha Voyager controller that I took out of my Dodge Ram. Don't need it anymore but it works perfectly. All you need is the Toyota harness to plug it right in. Can't remember if the 4Runners came with the harnesses or not. Usually, when they are included with the vehicle, they are in the glove box. Would cost you around $60 or so online. Will sell mine for $25 plus shipping. Let me know if interested.

Never mind - sold it

Instead of being oh-so-clever and simply saying "Yes", maybe the following will prove to actually be helpful to you.

The folks at E-Trailer have a video for installing a Prodigy P2 brake controller in a 2004 4Runner. The install is much like for a 5th-gen, but you shouldn't need to remove any plastic kick panels to get to the connector. The controller is part 90885, and the wiring harness you need is part 3040-P. The harness just plugs in between the factory connector behind the kick panel and the controller itself, and output from the controller goes to the appropriate pin on the 7-pin connector (assuming your trailer is wired per the standard).

The video is at

Here are a couple of threads pertaining to mounting the controller:

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the Answer

Thanks for all the great replies, for the generous offer to sell me a very high quality controller at a good price and for the link for installing a controller. I have a controller I am removing from my '03 Excursion and will purchase the adapter cable to make it work. I have the Prodigy and it is absolutely the best I have ever used.

Yeh Prodigy is good - I had one of those in the Chevy I just sold. Should have removed that and sold it as well. But I was also happy with the Tekonsha. They actually worked very similarly. I just don't tow anything anymore where I need one.
