towing

I'd want to unbolt the driveshaft even if the tranny /transfer case were totally fine spinning in neutral while off. One solid bump in the pavement and you risk slamming your tranny back into drive while towing it. Now THERE'S your power brakes.

It's a device built in to the hitch of the tow dolly that applies the trailer brakes when the tow vehicle slows down. I don't know if tow dollies have them or not. They're common on big boat trailers.

If the dolly doesn't have brakes I think I would still tow the T4R as Toyota rates the base truck to tow some 5K pounds. I would keep the speed down though, use low gears on downhill grades and keep my distance as stopping distance is likely to be long.

i'm in florida so no hills here. pretty straight path. hopefully when i see the truck it is driveable so i won't need it.

It won't matter if the transmission shifts in to ANY gear if the transfer case is in neutral. I flat tow my FJ62 with the automatic transmission in Park! But the transfer in neutral. The trans is not in play!

True, but that only works on a 4wd. The op never stated whether the parts truck is 2wd or 4wd

After debating which way to go towing my 02' 4Runner from AZ to UT behind a Penske truck, it was best and safest to disconnect the driveshaft at the rear diff input flange, and tie the driveshaft up into the frame. I initiated a thread about it as well not long ago.

If it has a full time center differential, and you are sure it isn't locked, it is ok but not great. If it has a transfer case (4Runner style), the front and rear prop shafts are locked together when the transfer case is in neutral... no bueno.

Very true, and I did NOT know that. The shafts are in fact locked together while the t/c is in neutral. That rules out dolly towing with out unhooking the rear shaft. Still doesn't affect the transmission, which was my point.
