Toyota FSM Procedure for WS Transmissions

Okay so this seems to come up a lot and I figured the least I could do is provide what the factory wants you to do when you change the fluid on a Toyota Sealed Transmission using WS Fluid.

Normally you need a TIS TechStream Scantool to get the transmission temperature. But according to a small section of the instructions there is a way to initiate a temperature monitor mode without a scantool. I personally have never done this so I can't say to whether or not it works.

This is a TSB with a flow chart showing temperature ranges that you need to be within to properly check the fluid level of a sealed transmission.

Small side note- I was talking with another forum member who wanted to change his fluid and he suggested using an IR thermometer to check the fluid temperature via the transmission pan. Since you are looking for an ideal range and not an exact number this should be fine also.

A secondary note in regards to Toyota WS Fluid:

I am in the process of trying to obtain a list of Toyota Approved WS alternatives. Unfortunetly I am not seeing any and the few WS Alternates that I have found seem to actually be thicker than what WS is tested for.

I'll try to keep you guys updated if I find any more information related to this.

POST NOTE- Because a fluid says it Meets and/or Exceeds OEM Specifications does not mean it is approved by the OEM to be covered under their warranty. Be very careful of that, as far as I have seen, unless it is API approved you take any risk of damage and/or failure into your own hands. Toyota as well as many other manufactuerer's will void your vehicle's warranty if their fluid testing shows you used a non-approved fluid.

Thank you very much for providing the numbers to us. . . . . very big help. I know I had mentioned to you that I was going to be using Amsoil WS fluid. I have looked into it and the Amsoil WS is a low viscosity oil. Amsoil has stated that they guarantee their WS oil in Toyota and will warranty the transmission against any problems related to the use of Amsoil's product. Just thought I would pass that along.

That is great news! Warranty is the biggest issue with using other WS Alternative fluids.
