Evidently, Toyota has recognized this as a problem and issued a TSB as Harper7 posted in another thread.

Went to my dealer today and obtained copies of the TSB and the "Repair Procedure", which you can read below.

They're replacing the rear propshaft, IF a tech confirms the condition. My appointment with a Tech is next Wednesday. I'll post results as they happen. I asked, and was told "the parts are available".

We'll see.

I've heard it a few times, but that is it, nothing recently though. I have an extended but I will keep an eye on this.

Mine does it at nearly every stop - the more abrupt the stop, the more pronounced the "thump". I do not hear anything, I feel it, it's exactly as described in the TSB; "feels like a bump from behind" as soon as I begin releasing the brake.

The Service Manager was very intent on knowing my mileage. I said "doesn't matter, I have the EW". He said "the EW DOES NOT cover TSBs, this is covered by the 60/60K powertrain warranty". I chose not to discuss this as I'm well below that mileage. Those pushing high mileage might consider this.

I thought this had to do with brakes or suspension when the tension was released from the system. Guess not...

I'm at 3k miles now...

42k miles never had this problem. I have been greasing the front/rear shafts every 5k miles though. Wonder if keeping the shafts full of grease reduces the chance of running in to this issue.

One would have though after this same issue with the GX470s, Toyota would have gotten this right on the 4R. Nope.

I did have mine in the 470 replaced as a TSB item, and there is a long thread about this very issue on the Lexus forum.

Just got mine done. Amazing what they charge for that sucker. $721, of course it cost me nothing and was under warranty but still that is a crazy number. I wonder if they would let me keep the old drive shaft. I am going to call back and ask if I can have it.

P.S. mine started about 3,000 miles. I too thought it was just a rough downshift after stopping, but I can't tell you how many times I looked in my rear view to see if someone had tapped my rear end.

OP, thanks for posting this! No problem with mine yet....

I had the exact same problem with my 2002 Tundra. It only happened when the slip yoke on the rear driveshaft wasn't greased properly.

There's a zerk fitting so it was pretty easy to hit it with lube. Everytime I lubed it up no problem. But just as others said it feels like someone taps the rear end of your truck. Mined happened at stop lights after hard breaking.

Toyota partszone shows retail price for new part # $641 plus 0.8 hour labor.
tpz selling it for 471.hereMIne doesn`t do it yet at 2300 miles. I``m wondering if mine has new part already. too bad there is no way to find out. or is it?

Thanks for posting this. I can't remember when it started, but many times I've checked my rearview thinking I'm getting bumped from behind.
