Toyota issues "fix" for axle wrap / driveshaft clunky-thumpy

any specifics on what the fix and issue was?

I have a new 2016 4runner and i have the same thing, stopped at red light, get a lurch like someone tapped my rear bumper. it makes me look back to make sure nobody hit me. I've searched around the forum and noticed a lot of posts of this but more geared toward older years

Bid bad,

Do you get this sensation when the AC is on?

I just had my driveshaft replaced on my 2010 Trail after handing the service manager this TSB. Apparently my transmission mount was also collapsed (from the transmission constantly getting thumped? who knows). Both were replaced under my MPP extended warranty after a little pushing from me.

I can say that after having the driveshaft replaced, the bump from behind when making a stop is 100% gone. It's wonderful. The hesitation/thump when shifting from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 1st is about 80% gone, and really not very noticeable at all.

2016 TRD Pro. Hit the road Jan. 1. 800 miles into it, I'm getting the clunky-thumpy noise from the back.... Like I have a two litter bottle rolling around hitting the rear gate at random times. Assuming I'm have the same issue I'm reading about here, and if this is a known issue for Toyota, that seems to date back as far as 2011, why is this still an issue? Is Toyota just ignoring it?

same on my new 16 sr5. called toyota headquarters, the tier 2 guy says this is the first time he's heard of it for a 16.
called up 4 local toy dealerships service adviser none of them has a clue.

i've only had my heater on, currently i'm trying to figure out how to consistently duplicate this issue, so i can take the toy mechanic on a test drive. my initial thought is to have him grease the zerk.

from what i read, braking on it hard is the best way to duplicate this bump?
More prevalent running with AC On, does it matter if its on hi or low, and what about running with the heater on.

Usually helps, but temporary. Now I make sure the zerks are done along with my OC. Mine has never reoccurred.

This worked for me. Hold the brake hard 'til dead stopped, the bump usually happens as you lift off the brake.

Personally, skeptical that this has anything to do with the issue.

Be sure you print and take the TSB with you. Also be sure you ride along. Both these steps do wonders to help the tech's memory.

firstly thanks so much.
What is OC? i'm not very good with car repairs and not sure what you mean.

My thump got to me after a weeks (2000 miles) of it happening daily. But it seems to have stopped now. I narrowed my thing down to 1. It was common that it would happen right after the car has been sitting for an extended period of time (like overnight.) 2. There needed to be a contrast in the interior/exterior environments (cold overcast mornings.) 3. Some variation of heat/ac is on or running. 4. Also a few completely random times that made no since at all. Just to **** with me.

In my head I speculated that I had some sort of vent flap in the rear gate that was sticking closed... and it would end up popping open when the interior/exterior pressures got to a certain point. I could be totally wrong. But I can only figure since the contrast in the interior/exterior environments seemed to be the most consistent variable in play for me.

OC = Oil Change

gotcha. my truck only has 500 miles on it a little early for an oil change. i did read someone mention that after 1k-2k miles it went away, im hoping that's the case as well. but i have it scheduled to get looked at thurs. the annoying thing is nobody at my local dealerships have said they encountered this issue before...

Ah life... I heard/felt the clunk the other day DAYM, go figure, we'll see if it goes away. If not, call dealer and see.

is the 2010-2012 rear drive shaft the same as the current 2016 4runners? Since the tsb applied to those years, my current 16 has a thump/forward bump sensation as well, wondering if it's using the same drive shaft or if toy ever changed it.

My 2016 trail has a clunk from day one. Mine is the slip yoke on the driveshaft and most noticeable when shifting from reverse to forward.

Greasing it only helped for a short time.

2016 SR5 premium, noticed the thump few days ago. Less than 600 miles on ODO. Will ask the dealer for a new driveshaft when I take it in to have the tires balanced due to shimmy in the steering wheel at highway speeds.

I want to personally thank you for posting this TSB. I went to Toyota yesterday to explain this exact issue. I pointed them to this post. I'm getting a new drive shaft assembly next week on my 2012 4runner SR5!

My 2013 is experiencing the same symptoms.
I do all my scheduled maintenance at my dealer on time... and each time they note "lubricated propeller shaft" but I doubt they do it properly (if at all). I was able to pump 20+ grease gun strokes into the rear shaft slip yoke until it started expanding - after they supposedly has greased it at the dealership.
It's still doing it a bit but quieter than before; it's also very hot now so I'll give it some time to see how it behaves. Also only drove 20 miles since filling it.
ZH. Ontario Canada.

If you pumped it until it started expanding, you have too much grease in it. The grease is just there for some lubrication, not to fill the cavity. With the cavity full of grease, there is nowhere for the yoke to go, grease doesn't compress.

Has anyone tried swapping a drive shaft from a 2016 or newer to fix the issue? I'm out of warranty and have several pick n pulls near me.

Sounds like a good idea if you can find one with low miles or one that’s actual been serviced. Have you done anything to try to fix your clunk? I would try overgreasing the slipjoint and removing the Zerk as a last resort before swapping.

Took my "Lifted" 2011 SR5 (4x4) into the dealer today for the random clunk-thump coming from the rear... Told dealer about the TSB, they put it on the rack, looked at it, and brought me back into the bay to talk with the service manager.

The service manager asked me who did my lift and took me under the truck to show me what was causing the issue. He showed me the front portion of the driveshaft was protruding out of the main body of the driveshaft due to the lift and this is what is causing the random clunk/thump (see pictures).

He also said he gets this issue a lot with people bringing in their lifted Tacomas and FJs, if he were to change out the old driveshaft for a new one Toyota would not except it and the new one would also have the same issue as the old because of the lift. He then proceeded to tell me about a nearby shop that deals with driveshaft issues like this, even gave me their contact info.

Given that I have been driving with my lift for more than a year now and have had no issues other than the random “clunk/thump” concerning the driveshaft, I am apt to think the dealer is full “O”:toilet:

For those of you with lifted T4Rs that have taken them into the dealer for this issue and had the driveshaft replaced per the TSB, did your driveshaft look like mine in the pictures before you had it replaced and what does it look like now after replacement (pics please)?

Any input on this issue would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Lift can also mess up your Automatic Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control and parking sonar.
