Just got a text from a coworker that the company owned 2011 Toyota Sienna that he’s been driving since new, currently with 358K original miles finally gave out on him. Said the transmission went out and the transmission fluid looks like mud. Original fluid, Never changed the fluid since he got the vehicle. Only thing replaced was the power steering pump, along with regular stuff like brakes, tires, oil changes and one water pump.

Yeah, I know, cool story bro. :moon:

So if you’re wondering how long a transmission would last without changing the fluid in a 2011 Sienna...its 358,xxx miles.

My 2020 TRD Pro is my first Toyota. I previously owned two Jeeps that I drove the wheels off with no real issues. If my 4Runner out lasts my Jeeps that’s saying something.

although i never went off-roading with my jeep; if my 4runner last half the lifespan of my jeeps, it’s still saying something. Every season i had to change something on my jeeps even tho that 4.0L inl-6 was untouched...
 
I have a 56 year old Toyota with 77k miles taking a nap in my garage...DEC 1963 build date. My Toyota's will probably outlive me!

My wife bought a corolla, brand new...it lasted her 275K...all she did was take it to jiffy lube every 3 months...whatever finally broke on it is a best guess. she never took it in for scheduled maint. or anything so...your guess is as good as minez.
heh, she didnt know any better until she met me.
My mother had the same car, and it lasted her 350K...so yeah, Toyos will give you 10yrs or more, for sure.

we bought our daughter a 2006 corolla for that reason, with 140K on the clock. i just performed its first oil change since purchase in december, dropped some full syn in it and replaced the tran fluid too. My daughter didnt like it cuz it wasnt flashy nor was it an SUV-ish vehicle...i told her kid, this car will take you into and thru ALL of your college years, then you can trade it in for whatever you like.

oh, yeah...and my 14 Rnnr is at 106K...my only issue is the door lock actuator thing...and i have thumbs to replace that.

I just got a 2006 corolla for $2100 a few months back 151K Miles. Guy was moving to Toronto in like 3 days needed it gone, and I only buy private party. You have any recommendations for maintenance besides the obvious? I did the water pump, motor mounts, and other minor things mainly brakes/suspension, but... there doesn't seem like there is a lot of stuff to change preventatively on it like say a 4runner.

Nothing that i can think of. Toyo builds the Corollas to be drive until they die type vehicles. Not much to fix, but they are so simply made, if you have to fix something its an easy fix at that. I have personally seen 4 corollas get into the 250s and beyond all on the original equipment. I also know from first hand information, Toyo and honda do the opposite of 'Merican makers...toyo and honda build their eco cars to last because they want the eco buyer to have such a great experience (among other reasons) that they will WANT to come back and buy a newer, higher end model. Versus other makers who's eco models are cheaper build quality and cheaper material'd. hence you find a ton of old Corollas and Civics on the road, while Ford Fiestas and Chevy all-of-em's tend to fall apart and disappear.

the one we bought had every seal, gasket, and rubber tube replaced on it, so its at as-good-as-new condition. Changing fluids made it drive smoother and quieter. Im no master mechanic, but i do expect this vehicle to be my daughters college car for the next 4-5 years with very little worry.

Corolla’s are excellent for young new drivers. My sister asked me to look at a 2004 Camry before buying it for my niece who is getting her CA DL next month. The thing only had 80K miles and the water pump and timing belt was done at 50K.

Other than cosmetic issues like paint oxidation, a few small dents, somewhat dirty interior it was mechanically sound. Just needed new tires. I’m confident it will last a good while. I just hope my niece takes care of it.

He drove it daily and when he brought it in for maintenance, our company’s fleet management would turn down recommended maintenance by the service centers it was brought to, (to save on costs, I guess?) and the transmission service was neglected and denied every time. Not sure what the reasoning was behind that but my coworker will be issued a brand new vehicle soon.

Maybe- maybe not. I worked for 27 years for a large company that had hundreds of 4wd SUV's.
They were leased and maintenance was managed by a company that specializes in that.
We were under strict orders to NEVER let any shop do a trans flush. Their studies showed FAR more problems with ones flushed than just leaving them alone. Most of that was ascribed to quicky lube places having no clue and doing the trans flushes wrong.
We were held to 5000 mile oil changes and you'd hear from management if you weren't doing them.

They typically ran the SUVs for 150,000 miles then dumped them. I went through 9 of them during those 27 years.
The worst were a Dodge Durango and a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The best were Ford's. Had some GM's mixed in there that were almost as troublefree as the Ford's but not quite.
They never ever bought any non-US brand.

That's a fair argument - not sure dealers can be trusted any more than quickie lube places these days. See so many struggle just to get the oil change right.

My personal experience has been with the wife's Infiniti. It's a G37 with 7 speed auto. Manual clearly states 7 speed is sealed unit and every maintenance interval calls out specifically DO NOT change fluid on 7 spd. So what does the dealer do every service? Tries to talk her into a transmission flush/fill. :rolleyes:

But still... I think at some point it would be beneficial to change the fluid. It can't last forever, can it? I guess we'll see.
