Toyota of Plano - Oil change fail

I have a 2016 4Runner which came with maintenance for the first 2 years or 25,000 miles, so I've been taking it to Toyota of Plano for oil changes. Last Friday they changed the oil, and failed to put the new oil in it. I drove it almost across the lot when the oil light came on, so I shut the engine down. Dipstick showed barely a drop of old oil. I kicked myself for not looking at the dipstick before starting it up. Service manager and a couple of mechanics came out, put 5 qts in, started it, took it back in the shop (I wasn't allowed back there to see what was going on), then he finally came out to talk to me. He said that, since the engine didn't seize, I should drive it a couple of weeks and bring it back, and then they will coffee-filter the oil and cut open the filter looking for metal. They also suggested a compression check at that time. So all they have offered at this point is some checking, and the *possibility* of a powertrain warranty extension - the service "director" said he would let me know whether the warranty is going to be extended in another week. I feel like they owe me at least that much since I have a 20,000 mile engine that I no longer have confidence in.

So I'll go back to doing oil changes myself from now on, even if they are "free" at the dealer. And I'll gladly accept recommendations for trustworthy independent shops in the Plano/Frisco/Allen, TX, area.

The good thing is you didn't drive it too far before you noticed that the light came on. Do you happen to know if there was any oil at all in the engine? You said they only put 5 quarts when the capacity is about 6.5qts so there may have been some oil in there which is good. I'd make sure to have everything documented at this point. Also get a sample of the oil to be tested by Blackstone Labs to see if there's any metals in the oil aside from just cutting the filter and looking. Also test your oil for the next couple of oil changes to see if there's any changes in the oils or metal contaminants. At the very least, I would want an extended warranty on the engine.

Thanks! That's good advice. I'm (wishful?) thinking that there was oil in the pan, since the dipstick showed a tiny droplet on the end. I don't know if they added more than the 5 qts when they took it back into the shop area. And you're right, it only ran long enough to get 50 yards or so across the lot. I've ordered the Blackstone Labs test kit, and I'll start the analysis routine.

I'd contact corporate....just saying.

Since my last post, I owe it to Toyota of Plano to let you know that TofP os going to extend my powertrain warranty, and are also going to do a few more ongoing integrity checks in the next few weeks to ensure the integrity of my engine. All in all, they are being reasonable in trying to work with me. I'll get on a regular plan with Blackstone for oil analyses at my regular oil changes.

When looking at 4Runners at Plano I couldn't get anyone to help me out. Multiple trips. Hop over to Richardson and it's a different story entirely, though their finance team was a touch skeevy and I left.

I had the same experience. TOR wasn’t helpful at all. I ended up buying mine elsewhere.

So far, so good with Atkinson

Have had nothing but positive dealings with Atkinson in southern Dallas. Bought a 2017 TRD Pro from them and have had two oil changes besides the 2 I have done myself. No issues so far and very professional to deal with.

An update that I forgot to post last summer. I purchased from Lone star Toyota in Lewisville. Salesmen were Paco Garcia and Jose Fuentes - they tag team deals so nothing falls through the cracks. Incredibly professional experience and they beat every price I could find. They let me order the exact truck I wanted ('17, SR5P, 4x4, Sunroof, NO 3rd row, No Add-ons, White on black) and offered an incredible discount.

Side note: I had to order because something like 90% on lots have a 3rd row and I just hate how much space they take up. Also couldn't find a white truck with black interior

Anyways, go see Paco and Jose at Lone star and I guarantee they will treat you better than any sales people you have ever dealt with.

I ended up going to JP Euro. He is North of 635 off of Miller road. I have referred many of my friends and fellow T4R forum members to him. If you wouldn't mind tell him i sent you. The Owner/Operator is Jason Phan.

Thanks for this! After switching from Honda (cars) to Toyota (Camry and 4Runner), my biggest concern was finding an independent mechanic. Sounds like JP is close by, too.
