Toyota Oil Filter 90915-YZZG1

How can I find out the relationships between Toyota oil filter numbers? It seems I often get different numbers for the same vehicle and quite honestly, I don't always trust the parts guys.

According to the Toyota oil filter application chart pdf 2015-2016, my vehicle uses a 90915-YZZG1 but my dealership sold me a 90915-YZZG2.

Does anyone actually know if the G2 is a correct substitute? Is it the "new and improved" version? I have googled till I can't google anymore....

But what is interesting is when I try and substitute the G2 for my vehicle, it says it doesn't fit???

How can it be that the G2 replaces the G1 but the G2 won't work on my car? The Toyota websites say to now use the D1.

I'm confused. I'm getting ready to change the oil and want to use OEM but...

I have read a few horror stories of what can happen if you use an oil filter with a different bypass value than what is called for in your car.

It's my understanding that the D series are plastic sealed pre-oiled units made in Thailand whereas the G series are unsealed unoiled made-in-the-USA items. As far as the numbering goes, I can tell you that the D3s are a little taller than the D1s are (4" versus 3 3/8") but I'm personally unsure about the #2s. I've been using 90915-YZZD1 on my 1999 4Runner without issue.
