TOKYO (AP) — Toyota Motor said Thursday about 270,000 cars sold worldwide — including luxury Lexus sedans — have potentially faulty engines, the latest quality lapse to hit the automaker following massive global recalls of top-selling models.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the U.S. government's auto safety agency, said Toyota had not formally notified it about a recall. Japan's top-selling daily Yomiuri said the company will inform the Japanese transport ministry of a recall on Monday but the paper cited no sources.

Toyota spokesman Hideaki Homma said the company was evaluating measures to deal with the problem of defective engines that can stall while the vehicle is moving. He would not confirm a recall was being considered.

The automaker has been working to patch up its reputation after recalling more than 8 million vehicles worldwide because of unintended acceleration and other defects.

Of the 270,000 vehicles with engine problems, some 180,000 were sold overseas and the rest in Japan. They include the popular Crown and seven models of luxury Lexus sedans.

Toyota said it has received around 200 complaints in Japan over faulty engines. Some drivers told Toyota that the engines made a strange noise.

Homma said there have been no reports of accidents linked to the faulty engines.

The automaker's shares dropped 2.3% to close at 3,010 yen in Tokyo on Thursday.

U.S. authorities recently slapped Toyota with a record $16.4 million fine for acting too slowly to recall vehicles with defects. Toyota dealers have repaired millions of vehicles, but the automaker still faces more than 200 lawsuits tied to accidents, a lower resale value of Toyota vehicles and a drop in the company's stock.

In the aftermath of the recalls, Congress is considering an upgrade to auto safety laws to toughen potential penalties against automakers, give the U.S. government more powers to demand a recall and push car companies to meet new safety standards.

Toyota said last week it will recall 17,000 Lexus luxury hybrids after testing showed that fuel can spill during a rear-end crash.

WTF is wrong with Toyota these days??!! Is there a jinx for anyone who is #1 in sales or something? Oh my goodness, Toyota quality has fallen...fallen fast! :(

France24 - Toyota warns of Lexus engine defect in Crown model

Toyota warns of Lexus engine defect in Crown model

"The defective engines, whose valve springs are not working properly, may halt in the worst case scenario while driving," Toyota spokesman Hideto Yukawa said. "The company is preparing for taking market measures as soon as possible."

The spokesman did not rule out a recall announcement in the future.

The defective 4.6-litre V8 and 3.5-litre V6 engines are installed in eight top line models, including some hybrids -- the Lexus GS350, GS450h, GS460, IS350, LS460, LS600h and LS600hL as well as Crown sedans, he said.

As many as 270,000 units worldwide, including some 90,000 cars in Japan, may be affected if the company decides to pull the models.

The world's largest automaker has been hit by a series of safety recalls and has pulled around 10 million vehicles worldwide since late last year.

According to Mike_TX on Clublexus:

"According to them, there is a set of robots that assemble these engines. In late 2007/early 2008, one of the robots was found to be out of adjustment, such that when it installed the spring, it scraped it and caused a "score" mark on it. That small score mark created a weak point that can cause a failure of the spring after thousands of cycles.

By the time they discovered the adjustment problem, a large number of engines had been assembled and put into cars, which had been shipped out over the world. It was not known if it would be a problem or not, nor when it might result in a failure, so Lexus had to deal with it when/if a spring failed. IOW, on a case-by-case basis. It wasn't practical to recall a ton of engines just because a spring "might" someday fail."

270K have potentially faulty engines?..No specific model are named?

Maybe, they are just declaring it for the thought that none of their cars are perfect. Than one day, safety agencies will slap them with more fines and more more lawsuits for hiding defects like last year, it took them too long to admit and recall vehicles.

Toyota is the biggest headache to American and European Auto makers. Toyota actually destroys the balance of the international automaker business. Since its the number one industry here in the US, this business can't recover because of these indestrutible toyotas.. Ha! ha! The only way to get away from a compitation in tough economy is to kill the opponent.. LOL!

Don't worry John, your VW and Land Rover will still remain at the bottom of quality despite all this.

Ask me how I know about VW quality. My 3 year old VW's AC takes 40 minutes to cool down if the temps are over 85 degrees. I have a feeling it will be gone within 2 years before it truly is worth nothing.

I'll go through the list of defects:
2007: AC compressor failure
2007: Paint chipping off factory aero kit (no collision)
2008: O2 sensor failure
2009: Cruise control stalk failure (at the beginning of a 5000 mi cross country trip)

Recalls are somewhere between 5 and 6... I've lost count.

Only 3k miles in, but my 4Runner has been perfect.

Parents just got a 2010 Tacoma with the 4.0 V6 so I was kinda worried when I began reading this thread...but I did notice that it does have a weird noise coming from the engine compartment when idling.....

It affects Lexus models. Specifically the 3.5L V6 which happens to be in my wife's IS350, the most expensive new car we've ever purchased. I'm pissed, but there is not much I can do about it. I'm watching the mailbox for a recall notice to fix it....:cry2:

And Apple is joining them with the iPhone 4 saga.

I crossed the GS350 off my list and G37 has taken its place.

With so many recalls, I don't by default tell people "get a Toyota" anymore when they ask what cars they should consider.

Seriously, if anything I tell them get an older Toyota, before the shit hit the turbine!

Too bad about Apple too. At least they've always been able to stay leagues above the PC world, but I hope the iPhone4 isn't the first sign of the future quality.

Yup, I say anything pre-2005ish or generations before those are good choices, if they're ok with used. Just avoid anything with the 1MZ engine and they'll be good. Toyota's from the late 90s are even better.

Well, I can't agree with you on the Apple statement. OS X 10.6 (SL) does have some great elements to it, but I also find some quirks that are annoying compared to a PC. (I won't get into it.) If we can combine the best from OS X and Windows 7, it'll be golden. I use both, but I'm more well versed with W7.

I have OS 10.6 at home and W7 at work so I know what you're saying about combining the features. I use my mac more, so I guess I'm just more used to OS. I was referring a little more to the performance of Apples compared to PC over the decades.
