Toyota Temporarily Suspends Sales of Selected Vehicles

I think the reason the car gets to run away it with the electronic throttle body. When I went off-roading and the truck got muddy I went to clean it right well I saw a lot of dirt on the connection to the throttle body. I have a V-6 so maybe this is why the cars run away. this is just my idea when me and my professor were talking about our cars. what do you think? side not he drives an Tundra crew max.

I doubt many people will go from a Corolla or Camry to a 4runner.

They will more likely go for a Civic or Accord.

Funny, my friend has a new Civic EX that does the same thing with the accelerator pedal, only difference is that the when computer senses the pedal is stuck it cuts the power WAY back and turns on the check engine light. The light isn't as big a problem as only being able to drive 50mph until the error is cleared. The second time it happened the dealer charged him $75 to reset it, so he purchased an OBD2 reader which he carries in the trunk at all times to reset it himself.

A dirty connection would DEFINITELY NOT cause a vehicle to have the throttle race. Whenever there is any sort of issue with the system it defaults to no throttle, not wide open. For the electronic throttle system to actually accelerate there are a number of steps that must be completed, in order, within the computer of the vehicle. Each of these steps have numerous fail-safes. It is an extremely redundant system and definitely has nothing to do with this most recent recall.

The most recent recall has to do with the physical wear on the gas pedal assembly made by only one of the vendors that makes this type part. All the cases thus far are with older vehicles in which the the part has worn and as a result had higher friction, it is this friction that leads to the pedal being harder to press down and as a result, harder to return to idle. The parts in question are by CST, an American vendor.

Timberline,

.....
Toyota vehicles created in Japan are not affected.

I have also noticed that. In my eyes, that is very sad news for US and Canada plant and US manufactures in general. It shows that even Toyota cannot keep the quality up in US and Canada.. it hurts, but that is the truth...

not good news. could artificially drive up demand for 4runners and make bargaining power lost in next few months. just my luck!

The Canadian Press: Toyota suspending sales of 8 models involved in accelerator sticking recall

I was thinking just the opposite - this could give potential 4runner buyers better leverage. Imagine you are a sales person at a Toyota dealership right now. You would be scrabbling to sell something. I'd bet they will be MORE willing to negotiate on a 2010 4runner since they have few other vehicles to sell !!!

I'm not surprised by any quality issues Toyota has experienced in recent years. I think this quote fits: "It's a devastating blow to Toyota and Toyota's reputation," said Dennis Virag, president of the Automotive Consulting Group. "Toyota is the new General Motors in terms of experiencing quality glitches, over-expansion and the proliferation of new product models.

has anyone sorted out why tr4 not included?

My question is - WHY are the tr4s not included in the recall/sales halt? Ideas?

It's too bad, but the difference is that Toyota still makes phenomenally reliable vehicles.

When Gm/Ford/Chrysler were #1 and had huge recalls, they also had to deal with the fact that they make crappy-unreliable vehicles.

Toyota, though taken a hit the past 2-3 years, are still at the top or near the top when it comes to quality.

I think that says it all.

The 4Runner is made in Japan, and does not use parts from CTS. The accelerator is made by Denso. :)

Still, why is my Sienna not part of the recall?? It is made in the US and is loosely based on the camry platform. Strange.

I'm not so sure about that. I have a Japanese built Rav4 and it is definitely not a glowing testament to Japanese built quality.

:iagree: Toyota is moving forward to become the next Government Motors.

The reputation damage from the sales halt and recall on the accelerator will take a long time for Toyota to recover from, if it ever recovers. The damage is done and the Toyota mark of quality will never be the same.

Toyota has been good, but other manufacturers are closing the gap. I don't think buyers are automatically flocking to Toyota dealers anymore when they're looking for a reliable car. I can definately see a difference and drop in quality on my recent Toyotas 04, 05 and 06 compared to my 1990 and relatives' 1992 and 94 Toyotas.

While Toyota advertises "80% of Toyotas sold in the last 20yrs are still on the road today." I bet the greater majority of those Toyotas are 15-20yrs old vs. 10yrs old and I don't know if Toyota can make the statement, "80% of Toyotas sold today will be on the road 20yrs from now." Toyota quality today just isn't the same as the Toyota quality of yesteryears'.

Hopefully with these big black eyes Toyota will focus to what brought them to becoming the #1 automaker rather than trying to be #1.

I never said NUMMI produced vehicles being unaffected by the recall.

Are they still building Vibes for the "dead" brand?

I meant it looks like NUMMI will hum along until plant closing. I don't know if those at the plants with the work stoppage will be paid. If they're not, then at least the NUMMI employees will have work until plant closing. Basically, what I mean is it sucks to being losing your job in April and now have work suspended (for an undetermined duration) and lose further pay on top of that.

Due to the sales suspension, Toyota is expected to stop producing vehicles on the following production lines for the week of February 1 to assess and coordinate activities. The North America vehicle production facilities affected are:

* Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Canada (Corolla, Matrix, and RAV4)
* Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana (Sequoia and Highlander)
* Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky – Line 1 (Camry and Avalon)
* Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (Camry)
* Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas (Tundra

Agreed. This won't mean more sales of the 4Runner. I would expect that if it does anything to 4Runner sales, it will decrease them as people lose faith in Toyota or don't realize that the 4Runner isn't involved in the recall.

what about the highlander, sequoia, and maybe rav4. It may flock more to see the 4 runner

To my understanding Thai the 2nd gen. Sienna did not use CTS as the supplier for this part, which would also explain why only part of TMMK is affected by the recall. I do know the 3rd gen. is using CTS, but they are currently retro fitting all the new Vans with new level parts at the plant since they have not shipped anything that has been produced since the launch.

I can't speak for the NUMMI workers since they are GM Union employees and their contracts dictate different pay agreements, but I can tell you that the (TMMI employees for sure) Toyota works are being offered 3 different options as far as the work and pay situation is being handled. 1) You can take off no pay no corrective action 2) you can use P.aid T.ime O.ff (vacation) or 3) you can come to work and they will find something for you do training, 5s (cleaning), or kaizen work.

Please don't get me wrong when I mention that the NUMMI employees are GM employees, I sincerely feel sorry for all of them losing their jobs, I would not wish that upon my worst enemy, but it is a fact that allot of people do not realize. Them losing their jobs is not because Toyota is leaving, but because GM decided to break their contract with Toyota through the bankruptcy.

Hello,

Talk about being kicked when you are down, according to USA Today Article, Government Motors is offering $1000 Cash Back and 0% Financing to those who trade in a Toyota for a GM Car. :wtf: The GM Stealers state they are receiving calls from concerned Toyota Model owners.

TMC Quality has been slipping for years and there are those who are ready to exploit a golden opportunity to slip in and take customers. I have to question TMC Quality since some of us T4R owners have the Frozen/Sticky Caliper problem with low miles. Calipers should last near the useful life of the vehicle.

When the stealer went to replace my caliper on my 4R, the parts dept ordered the left/driver side caliper, except the part box had the right part #, but the wrong caliper, the right/passenger side caliper. I wasted a day and had to come back. Putting the wrong parts in the right box is not good. If this is happening with parts, imagine what else is going on.
