TOYOTA TIS Techstream

[MENTION=1747]<<<<[/MENTION] (or anyone more competent than myself) how did you get past the "Unable to Connect to VIM" message?

i have the Techstream 9.10.037 software working on an old XP laptop. i used the Tiskey software and the red light on the cable is illuminated but i can't connect to the truck. the .msi file i used was recognized as a PowerPoint file, which seemed weird, but i'm not a Windows guy so when the cable lit up i figured i was good to go.

any ideas?

It's been quite a while since I got my Techstream going, so my memory on this is a little sketchy. If the driver msi installation file did not run, most likely the software can't see the adapter. Normally if you right click on the msi file, you'll get a context menu pop up, and should have the choice of "Install" in that menu.

The other thing that I missed when I was trying to get mine going was to replace the "mainmenu.exe" in the program directory with the cracked version supplied with the software package.

thanks for the response. the weird thing is that the .msi was appearing to XP as a PowerPoint file; no "Install" option when right-clicked.

i just tried installing it via the Command Prompt by typing: msiexec /i E:\MVCI Driver for TOYOTA.msi

(the files are on a USB flash drive; this laptop is not networked). it appeared to install the driver (i guess) and returned to the C prompt.

i'm still not sure that it worked though... :shrug:

well, unplugging and re-inserting the cable Windows is prompting me to install drivers/Add New Hardware again, so it would appear it didn't work. hmmmm

i think i have it! installed the MVCI driver from the CD that came with the cable (scanned the file for viruses and Symantec didn't find any, but who knows how old its database is on this old laptop) and now at the bottom of the Techstream window it shows "VIM - XHorse - MVCI MVCI J2534 DLL v1.4.7”

the cable blinked between red and green a couple times, and then proceeds to the Vehicle Conection a Wizard, where you enter the model, year, engine, option info... looks like this works. gonna give it a try in the truck tomorrow!

Well shit....I just went and grabbed my laptop to see what you might be missing. Glad you got it working.
One question.... You said it got to the window where you enter the vehicle info; it should fill this out for you and then you confirm it is correct. Is this different than what you saw?

i am sitting on my couch, so it's not connected to the vehicle yet. thanks for confirming that it should recognize all that info automatically (it seemed weird that someone would have to enter that).

the light on the cable is green now. i'm optimistic this will work when i connect to the vehicle.

I have only had to manually enter it on a few Toyota's I have worked on.

No matter how well you get the TS working you will not be able to re-program keys

Could you elaborate a little on this? I ordered an ebay key, had it cut locally and had no issue programming the immobilizer and keyless entry myself with an ebay cable and the copy of TS that is floating around.

Really? You were able to program a blank key chip to work with your car? I know you can do it without TIS, but did not know you could do it without subscribing to the Security edition of TIS.

Had zero issues doing it. Just followed the onscreen instructions for both.

You have to turn USB interface on in system tray and/or Techstream. It is Off by default. As for the key programing - it is easy and done in Techstream you already have. GL

Definitely easy, just wish I could monitor data points on my truck. Stupid error

great success with TechStream today. passenger seat chime disabled; moonroof now opens with windows (both with key in cylinder and holding down button on remote), adjusted rear wiper interval. looking forward to playing with it a bit more when time presents itself. :trophy:

no it will not you can do reset manually, has been explained about 2000 times here.

well, that was not correct. I upgraded with the latest version 9.30.somthing and it is now not working and asks for the new key. It shows the "current" key as being blank. How do I go about using the new version?

I originally bought one of the ebay techstream mci's.

To make this work, do the following :

Edit IT3System.ini in

Available Function Setting

[AvailableFunction]
MinorFunction=1
TISFunction=1
UserFunction=1

CHANGE TISFunction-=1 to 0

I verified this works.

It worked for my 2014, but I had to select 2013 in the startup menu because the software I ran wasn't updated? Maybe that is the issue?

I've just received my mini vci cable and got techstream working on my 2015 TEP.

I wasn't able to find the setting for enabling the factory alarm like I've seen on other posts for '10-'13 4Runners. Anybody have any luck with that on a '14-'15?

I'm new to the forums and just bought my first 4Runner this weekend. I'll be following this closely.

The dealer stated that there was a 'module' they had to remove to disable it since the price tag on it was absurd. I just ordered my mini VCI tonight. Has anyone been successful with this on the 2015s?

1). Install TOYOTA TIS
2). Install MVCI driver

How to active Toyota TIS techstream 10.00.028?
Open IT3System.ini
C:\Program Files\Toyota Diagnostics\Techstream\ Env\IT3System.ini
Change TISFunction=1 to TISFunction=0
Save
All ok

Important note about Techstream Area Selection:
Choose Europe, otherwise you will get error message: Unable to Connect to VIM
