Looks like a Jeep Renegade, after being beaten by the ugly stick. :barf: The tire size is identical to the Renegade Limited by the way.
Yeah it's terrible, however it's got a look that says I'm never going to production.
I do agree with everything you're saying. I think the reality with the 1GR-FE as it stands in the 5th gen 5Runner is just that we don't really get great performance in either aspect - power or MPG.
Just for comparison's sake:
A 5.0L V8 F-150 has 385hp, 387lb-ft of torque and nets about the same 16MPG as a 4Runner.
Dodge/Ram's 5.7L V8 makes 395hp, 410lb-ft of torque and also nets about 16mpg.
These are obviously big full size trucks with worse aerodynamics than a 4Runner, as well as V8s, but they both also have more than 100 more lb-ft of torque and horsepower... but return the same MPG.
I dont hate the 1GR-FE at all... it's a fine engine. But comparatively when you look at the specs on paper and at the pump, it's just terribly deficient.
Hoping that there is a strong, new truck-appropriate V6 in Toyota's new Dynamic Force engine family.

This actually makes me a little mad and downright disappointed. I just cannot understand how in any way, shape or form this is even going to be more than a bug splat on the new Bronco's windshield? I can't even laugh at that deplorable turd. I hope Toyota does read these forums and it does invoke a sense of "what the hell is Calty doing?".
1) Small displacement 4cyl Gee, thanks.
2) Continuously variable transmission. Just die. Die Dead. WTF.
3) “picture window” set into the C pillar, spanning from the wheel well into the roofline. It’s removable, allowing the owner to substitute a tinted glass panel suiting his or her mood Again, just go fire yourself.
4) The interior is an imaginative festival of small object storage bins, helpfully color-coded—blue, for closed storage, orange for open, in case the user has trouble distinguishing between them. HO-LEE-FARTBISCUITS! Is that bin open or closed?
Calty design chief Ian Cartabiano sums it up as “rugged charm.” "Look! A water tanker and vinegar tanker collided!!
"Ford's coming out with a solid front axle Bronco to compete with the Wrangler? I got this, hold my beer!...
Let me explain what a Bronco killer might appear like Mr. Carabiano...

Problem is that given Toyota's seemingly "out of touch"-ness with certain aspects such as "performance" and "off-road capability" as well as their Truck/SUV popularity; this will be the type of vehicle that kills the 4Runner. They have the Rav4 (and soon Rav4 Adventure!), unless they're going to incorporate these ideas into a new Rav4 I doubt they'd want to directly compete with their own CUV. They have the CH-R now as well to give people a quasi "two-door Rav4" feeling and then the Highlander to fill the bigger niche there as well. Considering their push to move everything onto TNGA sooner rather than later, my guess is this will be the under pinnings (though most likely not styling) of the new Rav4 when they get around to doing another generation. If not expanding it to a slightly larger platform to try and axe the 4Runner going down the line (a mistake in my opinion.)

It's sort of up in the air as Toyota lately can't seem to make a consistent direction/decision without stumbling over themselves or just missing the mark completely.
Post Note-
Oh Snap! I didn't realize the funky space handle was to switch between "barn door mode" and "hatch mode", that's actually pretty damn cool!
