toyotec superflex why do i need bumpstop extentions

I currently run Icon 2.5 piggyback res. with OME 890's. im looking to upgrade to toyotec superflex springs but is says I need bumpstop extentions with a longer shock. toyotec also recommends using bilsteins 5100 series shock which is longer I guess. how much different are my icons vs bilsteins in length i would think that my icons are better lol. i just have no clue why i need bump stop extensions with my icons when I already don't run them anyway if i upgraded. i contacted toyotec about this a couple days ago. just waiting for a response? until then anyone with experience in this matter.

Only reason I can think for bump stops is because the coil is longer and there for can compress the shock to much and blow it out ? It's a good question. I my self half this set up , Toytec superflex/bilstein 5100/ ss bump stop.

The springs are around 3.5-4" lift depending. If you are running standard length shocks they will over compress and blow out. Land cruiser shocks are longer but are also known to blow out from over compression.

Most shocks are not designed for the amount of lift LC and superflex coils give so you need to maybe contact ICON to find that out. I run lowered bump stops with my 7 wrap LC coils. It also helps the tires from hitting the wheel well when compressed.

Rule of thumb is lower bump stops the same amount you lift for them to work correctly. 3 3/4" is what the SS drops them I believe.
 
It could be to keep the tire from trying to tear your quarter panel off when wheeling like mine currently tries to with OME coils lol. This only happens when really flexing it out on the trail for me....
 
I just got off the phone with toytec and with the ICON 2.5 he wasn't positive if I needed them. pretty much I purchased them without the bump stop ext. my tire size is 265 75 r16 (31"). if they ended up rubbing then ill get them. my whole reason for this is I bottom out bad with the set up I have now. without converting to long travel I want to push the limits where I can.

If you're in doubt, you can just stop by your local junkyard and grab Trailblazer bumpstops. A lot of us here use them as an ultra-budget solution!
 
hm, with 265's you may be ok. My truck was fine until I tossed on the 285's. I could fit the 265's all the way in at the rear to the bumpstops and they didn't hit the firewall in the front.

Why would having a longer spring make your shock compress too much?

It sounds like you need to extend the bump stops so the spring doesn't overcompress and bind up, and if you extend your bump stops you may as well extend your shocks for more travel. I'm not understanding what people are saying...

I believe when your lifted 4" it now allows the coil to compress further before hitting the stock bump stop. At least thats how its been explained to me by some local Toyota shops and Steve at SS. I never have really compressed and measured to make sure. Just took there word for it as they have said they tested this out. Its why SS has it with all his LC rear coil lifts.
 
the reason ive heard is that with a bigger lift, 4"-5", you need to run longer shocks, and the longer shocks have a longer compressed length. so in order to protect the shock you extend the bump stops.

another reason is it gives you more clearance when you hit the bump stop so you dont bottom out on something while flexing or going fast.

third reason being to prevent rubbing with a bigger tire, and the tire will actually stuff further with longer shocks.
 
D farms is right. Longer shocks have a longer compressed length and will bottom out sooner than stock length shocks. Most people just extend their bump stops but another option is to raise the upper shock mount so your axle hits the bump stops before your shock gets fully compressed

I'm trying to find out the exact length I should extend my bumpstops for my tockico lc shocks. I've been running the setup for about 3 years now but I've been doing a lot more wheeling lately and I keep blowing shocks. I think it's due to over compression. I've cut and hammered a lot in the rear to clear 285's with as much up travel as possible so I don't want to lose travel by making my bumpstops too long.

I may just remove my rear coils and compress the axle in every which way to find the ideal bumpstop length. But hasn't anyone done this already?

I know a lot of people are running the blazer stops, but has anyone actually confirmed that these are an ideal length?

It is due to over compression. I have had these shocks since my lift with extended stops and they are just as good as I put them on years ago.

You want to lower them as much as you lifted the rig. Steve at SS has his lowered 3 1/4" for his lift kits he sells with 7 wraps.

Contact sonoran steel. He can help you with the exact length of your bump stops.

He helped me get a custom bump stop for the rear after I provided the information he requested.

Thanks for the reply. This is only true if the compressed length of the lc shocks is 3 1/4" longer than the stock shocks though. The compressed length is what determines the need for longer bumpstops.

Does anyone happen to know the compressed lengths of lc shocks vs stock shocks?

Yes I completely understand. If you add 3" lift and lower them 3" your putting your bump stops back where they will function no madder the compressed length of the shock. If you go any further you will just ruin your up travel. Why dont you just take it off and measure if you dont believe me. Different year LC shocks can have different lengths also.
 
There are 2 ways to do this. One is to measure the compressed length of stock and new shocks and ad extended bump stops in whatever length the difference is. Or you can do what you said before, pull the coils and see where your shocks bottom out straight and flexed then add 1/2" longer to your bump stops. Also springs don't make a difference when is comes to bump stops only shocks. Unless you have some crazy long coils that will over compress. Which LC coils don't have that issue and I doubt any other coils for our rigs have that problem
