Toytec Boss Coilover leaking

Bought a set of the Toytec Boss coilovers in July of 2015. Noticed a leak the other day coming from passenger side spring. Called and they said a tablespoon of grease could leak if a seal fails, however this is way more. Cleaned up and checked it again today and it has leaked quite a bit. Not sure how long it has been leaking bit can't feel or hear difference in ride right now.

I have only put 18k miles on 4runner since the suspension was installed. It's a daily driver and doesn't leave the pavement. Not super impressed. I can spend $300 and get a new shock, but wanted to see if there was a better option and if this is a common occurrence?

Toytecs answer when I called "You can't expect a performance shock to last as long as an OEM shock" Leaves you wondering where the performance part is supposed to kick in. I wouldn't be recommending Toytec to anyone.

In the process of ordering Icon's, at least they are rebuild able.

That's a BS line if I've ever heard one. I fully expect a "performance" suspension system (which I paid a premium for, BTW) to last as long or longer than an OEM design. Especially in a situation where it is seeing limited "performance" duty.

A company like Toytec should be ashamed of trying to shovel that excuse to anyone...

I wonder if they rag on Billies as hard as their own product!

I'd be packing them up and sending them COD back to Denver after a set of Icons got installed on my truck.

It's a glorified 5100, and those suck lasting long too. Honestly they're in the realm of "nice cheap shocks" and not in the higher and rebuild able and longer lasting tier of shocks. If it was me I would save up the bucks for a set of Fox/King/ADS/Icon, etc.

Told me on the phone that was very surprising and he normally sees 80k out of them. I find that hard to believe as much as I've babied my 4runner.

When mine started leaking they were puking oil. Like leaving puddles in the driveway. Mine had like 50-60k miles on them. They'd seen a lot of off road time, but also a lot of highway. Decided it wasn't worth the $400 for new shocks to put on them so I spent the extra cash to get a set of rebuildable Kings. The Toytecs are sitting in a box now incase I decide to have a shop rebuild the Kings and I don't want to do it myself.

With the Kings you get a much better ride, they're rebuildable, and a different world in terms of performance. I should have bought Kings from the start. Lessons learned for the next build though.

Not impressed! Decided to spend less money and go with toytec/Eibach 3" for about ~$460, using the t4r.org promo code.. the ride is really nice so far, but we'll see how they last..

No need for kings/icon on a daily IMO when my mileage is already in the 200k's.

Im with ya there. Can you set those toytech/eibach to lower than 3"? Say 2.5"? I already have the eibach coils, wonder how much for just the shocks? Im sure a shop would charge $100 a pop for switching out shocks anyhow. If I decide to buy a new boss Shock and reaload coilover will I have to have an alignment?

Same story here. Mine had about 15k on them basically all street driving. They told me I could buy a new shock. Why would I buy more just to have them leak after a year or two. Wont buy Boss Shocks again.. ToyTec whatever. Pretty disappointing.

You're misinformed bub. Have you ever seen NHRA drag strip cars? Their motors get rebuilt almost every pass down the track. Know why? High performance parts don't last as long as OEM.

One person's claim of "I dont go off road" is moot... highway expansion joints, train tracks, pot holes and other road hazards can cause suspension issues. Everyone ALWAYS claims to be the best driver....mm hmm.

You'd be wasting your time and money expecting a company to do anything for you just by "sending them a cod".... lol.

I bought a pair of BOSS coilovers in August 2015. I took them ALL over Colorado, Utah, and a road trip to south Alabama and back. Daily driving and all skill level trails for 2.5 years. Never had any issues. Must be user error.

What made me want to switch to a 2.5 was knowing how much faster I can go off road than a 2.0 BOSS.

Not sure how daily driving and pretty much zero off road is user error. My bad though, maybe I didn't read the part where asphalt makes the seals prematurely fail.

It's not that I don't want to drop the money.. I have spent way too much on my runner as it is.. just kind of tired of doing it.

We are simply stating for future 4runner owners that are considering the BOSS coilovers and looking to spend +$800 to know our experience with them.

Consider yourself lucky. Sounds like their is a lot of user error going on out there. I'm just stating facts... 18k miles on cushy terrain and failure. I did spend A LOT of money on a performance suspension. I dont want to do it again, at least not this soon.

It's pretty obvious people will buy Toytec stuff and are expecting Icon/King performance.

BOSS coilovers are GREAT for people who don't drive their trucks like they stole em. Plain and simple. If you drive more aggressive or fast off-road...BOSS coilovers are not for you.

People act like there's some kind of promise or guarantee that BOSS coilovers are best on the market, but there has never been that claim from the company that I've seen.

My experience was great. Sucks yours wasnt.

I NEVER expected my Boss suspension to be anything comparable to Icon or King.. I placed them in the middle of the road category.

Based on your statement Boss coilovers should have been perfect for me based on my driving.. but if you think 15k on coilovers is cool and then leaking is acceptable... nope.

Not one person here would make a statement that Boss coilovers are the best on the market.. That's just a dumb statement.

That's awesome your's have worked out and just because you have had luck with them doesn't mean that we are crazy cause we have complaints. I guarantee if you had our experience you would be right here with us.. so just sit back quietly, knock on wood, and enjoy your shocks. Maybe Toytec will send you some stickers for standing up for them.

Anyway, Top Fuel Dragsters are not economy suspension lifts. That's false equivalency and you know it.

The COD comment? It was tongue-in-cheek. Think Adam Sandler dropping a flaming bag of dog crap on a doorstep in one of his better movies.

I wouldn't ship them back.. I'd stew and eventually chuck them.

Regardless, a "performance" part should be engineered to a higher standard and not fail nearly as prematurely as OP's. It should be easy to agree on that.

I don't know about you, but I'm going to step away from being a keyboard warrior and dream about a nice set of Kings! :dance:
