Toytec Heavy Duty Rear Coils

Throwing it out for anyone with experience with Toytec Boss lift.
I'm running a Basic non adjustable front coil over / Bilstien Toytec lift now and about to upgrade to a Toytec Boss Ultimate lift and am wanting to hear from anybody who installed the the Heavy Duty rear coils as an option over the standard Boss coils.

The reason I ask is, I don't haul heavy weight in the back 100% of the time, nor do I have a heavy rear tire carrier. But on trips of about week long in the back country of the southwest, I'll haul an extra 60ltrs of fuel and and up to 60ltrs of water plus camping gear for 2-3 people.

Will the HD coils be to stiff/harsh for an enjoyable ride when empty?
My current Toytec suspension felt a little soft with 1/2 of that in the rear of the truck. It rides supple, but I worry the standard coils won't be up to par for trips with weight.

I used to change out the rear coils on my Land Rovers from the mediums to the heavies when going on extended trips, just don't want to be bothered with that option anymore.

Thanks

I'm running the RCC2.0HD on my 4th gen. When running empty (I don't have any aftermarket bumpers) it is stiff (not shaking out fillings stiff), but when there is >100lbs of gear it's perfect IMO. They also helped level my bride when towing my 5000lb travel trailer.

I installed the 25BOSS lift from Toytec and used the HD rear springs. it was massive overkill for my needs - the truck had an insane amount of rake (the hd springs are longer AND stiffer), and the ride was pretty darn harsh. I talked to Toytec and they told me unless i have roughly 200lbs of permanent additional weight on the back (like a steel bumper, jerry cans, jack etc), i should have gone with the regular duty springs.

They gave me a deal on a replacement set of "regulars" and they were installed last week. I'm much happier now.

Where are you in CO? I've got a set of HD springs with 200 miles on them for sale in Durango. :thumb3:

When I order my my BOSS lift I talked to Drew at Toytec and he said the same thing. Unless you have a steel
Rear bumper stay away from the HD springs you will hate the ride. I can say that I am extremely happy with the ride on the standard spring you get with the kit.

I have the boss setup with the standard rear coils and with a heavy load the rear sags. I regularly load up with at least what you are describing if not more. The springs struggle to handle the load but unloaded it's perfect. Due to this as I continue to mod the truck and load it more (Adding drawers shortly for example) I will be looking to go with an airbag rear setup soon so that I can adjust for load. I attached a picture of the truck loaded but without adults, kids and dogs. Add maybe 500 lbs for all of us. You can see the reverse rake. Sorry the two pics aren't exactly the same

Hmmm...I've been kicking around the thought of trying the HD springs. My cargo system with fridge and gear clocks around 250-300, and lives back there. Add the RTT and I'm in the ballpark of needing them.

Was just in Durango a few weeks ago too, but I'm back in Houston now. Not sure when I will be back in town next.

Thanks fellas,
That's pretty much what I expected to hear as having a lot of experience with Old Man Emu set-ups on my Rovers,
It's always a compromise.
I wonder if the Toytec HD coils are progressive rated?
I know I do have 150lbs of load in the rear 90% of the time.

I think the HD would be pretty rough, the airbag option with regular super flex seems like the best for what you describe given the large variation in weight. I started with Sway away rear springs which are 12% stiffer. The were ok until I added the rear bumper, even when running heavy the HD springs are stiff enough to still have some rake.

Excellent, Good to know,
I had a set of Ride Rite air bags on a Dodge 3500 years ago. They seemed to work well for a similar situation. (Empty bed to a fully loaded Bigfoot slide in camper)

After all the posts, Think I'll just stay with the standard springs.
Thanks

Just finished up installing Radflo's 2.5 kit and used the toytec HD rear coils. I was debating between these and some OME springs, but OMEs I was considering are so much stiffer +40% vs. +25% for the Toytec HDs. With very limited time behind the wheel with this setup the ride does not seem too harsh. I am running a rear bumper 110lbs (no tire carrier / swing out) and have homemade box in the back which I'm guessing is around 75lbs. So probably consistent with Toytec's advice...around 200lbs daily driving and the ride is nice...so far.

Hope this helps.

If you run around more unloaded than loaded, get airbags. Cheap and easy solution. When you load up, throw a few pounds of air in them and roll on. I threw a CRF250L on a hitch carrier yesterday (a bit under 350lbs hanging off the back end), went up to about 17 psi of air in the bags and i will still able to keep some positive rake, headlights weren't blinding everyone and the ride was good. Best of all, i drop the bags back to 5psi after unloading and the ride is the same. Just a suggestion. I don't like sacrificing my unloaded ride and handling for the times i do load up.

I know this is super old, but do you still have those HD springs?lol

Ride feel is a personal thing. Some people believe everything should be plush. At the same time some believe the laws of physics don't apply to them and a vehicle can't lean, dive or shift.

Different car but I had HD springs in my old 4 door Wrangler. I hated them and have no plans to get that heavy of a spring in my 4runner or any daily driver.

If you are trying to use an HD spring to fix the negative rake issue, that's the wrong tool for the job. Every vehicle has a rake for a reason. When you add a load, springs compress. The allows the vehicle to remain level when loaded.

If you remove the rake, you are creating your own negative rake issue.

My 2 cents is .... Buy the correct springs to retain the rake and weight rating for your needs.

I've run both for exactly the reasons you and others described.

Started with the Boss and I loved how it rode, plush and supple, yet firm with no lean or nose dive. Offroad it was fantastic. Loaded up for camping it did squat a little but still retained excellent characteristics. Did a 7 day off road trip, rocks for days, it was great.

When I added a roof rack 100 lbs and Roof Top Tent 200 lbs, plus gear it still drove great, but still had some squat. Cars would bright me at night as the headlight were too high. So i got the HD springs and it handled the weight of the rack, tent, just fine. I added drawers and a full size spare in the stock location. Ran it all summer like this and then even more gear on a 30 day camping/off road trip with my 2 sons. Drove great on and off road.

With my parents coming for Xmas, I took off the tent and drawer system out.. It feels stiffer, but not harsh. Being loaded all summer may have helped settle the springs some what.

The original set up was magic (non HD). It was like good moto suspension.

If you arent hauling full time at least 250 lbs I wouldn't go HD.

Reviving this thread...

I just ordered a Toytec Boss lift, and am having some reservations about the HD coils. I talked to Hugo, and he was very friendly and helpful, though he was really pushing me for the heavier springs. I do have a RTT (130 lbs) which sits on the vehicle most of the year, and always have my tool box (need to weigh it, maybe 40 lbs), and often have a bike rack on the back (again need to weigh, maybe 50 lbs, more with bikes). I will probably also do sliders pretty soon (~ 100 lbs?) With all that, I am hoping it won't to be too stiff.

I had planned on a 2" lift... I think the springs are +2.5". Wondering how much they will sag? The coilovers come set at 2.5", but are adjustable, I was thinking of dialing them down a little to 2", but don't want to add rake. I like the stock rake.

Now, I'm also worried that those brand new 255/75 KO2's are going to look small...

So hard to make this kind of investment/change without really knowing how it's going to turn out...

To this I suggest to leave springs for last after everything else is on the truck.. will help you decide how much more spring you need

I’m on my 2nd set of coils to finally have it right

I installed the Toytec HD coils a few months ago on my 4Runner. I went with Toytec because of the claimed "2.5 inch lift with 150lb-200lb additional weight" since it was the smallest lift I could find with a HD coil. But despite having sliders, a roof rack, a completely full drawer system, a 50 liter fridge, and a heavier 285 spare, it ended up giving me a little over 3" of lift. I'd estimate I have 500-600lbs of added weight back there, so their 2.5" with 200lbs claim is way off.

I still think it looks pretty good though... I added 1.5" spacers in front (because I was expecting 1.5" in back with all my weight), so I still have quite a bit of rake. Here are some photos:

After (HD coils and front 1.5" spacer, same weight in back):

Well... That makes me a little nervous... I was hoping for a 2" lift, now I'm hoping it won't be over 2.5"... Great looking truck btw.

So as an update, I've been running the HDs for 2 years now. Always thought it was a little harsh compared to the xreas I ripped out. But I'm at the tipping point now because I snapped off my Bilstein extended shock. What Toytec told me was that they are only good for 2.5" of lift and I was likely dropping more and snapped it. They've recommended their Boss shocks - the basic extended travels and or their version of that with the remote res.

I've been told part of the harshness was likely the Bilsteins not being able to handle the compression and drop of the springs. Always felt like the rear end was being short-sheeted on bumps so I'd likely support that.

I just did a 1200 mile trip with 20 or 30 miles of trails with that same broken shock and can tell you without the limitation of the shock (once you get over the hoop-d-du shockless rollercoaster ride, feels smooth. This further supports the shock being the culprit in the hard ride.

So - option one is to buy a true long travel shock that wont screw up the spring compression and drop or jack up the harsh ride beyond the extra firmness of the spring.

Or cut bait - downgrade the springs to regular weight and install the airbags I've got sitting in the garage. The cheapest way is to install a low cost long travel shock pair. Outside of Boss - I've looked at King, Icon and Metal Tech Long Travels. Any others you'd suggest looking at. Bilsteins won't cut it.

I know this is way old....but did you do the HD springs with your stock trd pro bilstein suspension?

I have the trd pro suspension on mine with the toytec 2 inch lift which came with the superflex rear coils. I have since added a rear plate, fridge slide and surround. and an arb drawer. As soon as I put my hitch tire carrier and load up for trips I get a little negative rake. I have been told the trd pro bilstein cant handle the hd spring, so I wonder how yours does.

Thanks!
