TPMS and winter wheels

The light will not come on unless you drive for a certain amount of time. I'm not sure of the exact amount, approx 45 minutes. What happens is eventually the TPMS ECU does not receive a signal and trips the failsafe.

The reason some are able to travel many miles away from the stored wheels is that the system "clock" resets every time the vehicle is shut off.

This strikes me as odd. So, if I have a low tire, and only drive 20 min to work, and then 20 min home -- the system will not sense a low tire?

maybe this may work for winters set, ATEQ TPM QuickSet Reset Tool

This works well for the winter set only if they have tpms sensors in them. I just put on a new set of 17" rims with Nokian Hakka R's. I sprung for the TPMS sensors as well as the ATEQ tool. Before I took the 4r into the shop I used the ATEQ to pull the summer codes off. After the new tires were installed the shop reprogrammed everything for the new sensors. I was then able to pull out the winter tire information. Now I can swap back and forth myself and reset the computer each time. You can also use the ATEQ to reset new tires if you know the sensor ID's and which tire they are on.

Again great tool but it won't just turn off the TPMS light it will just reprogram the computer to read new sensors.

This is exactly what happens to me. From home to work 18 km (20 min drive) one way+some driving around town. Light has been off for two weeks now without four TPMSs in place. We use family mover (Sienna) for long weekend trips.

I looked into similar set up. It was $600 over what I have now.

I think mine was about $80 a wheel for the TPMS ($320) plus the $125 for the Ateq which is $445. Pretty expensive upgrade due to stupid federal regulations. In the long run I will be OK because I can change the tires when I want with waiting for and paying for an appointment. I didn't on my last vehicle and 11 years of at least $50 twice a year for tire swapping was a waste of money not to mention the time to get the car to and from the shop.

I know I can run without the TPMS but I don't want to look at the warning light all the time on a brand new rig. If I get 15 years out of the 4runner it will be a negligible cost in the long run.

No, the time limit only applies to no-signal situations... when no signal is detected the tpms light will flash and not stop until the tpms ecu receives a signal again.

when a sensor transmits a low pressure signal, the light will come on quickly and it will be solid light

I agree. If I were buying winter wheels on brand new rig I would probably do the same thing.
