TPMS destroy a tire?

I just got a phone call from my sister that she had a flat. The garage is telling here that the TPMS became loose and caused the tire to loose air pressure and come off the rim. This all happened with in half a mile or so of driving.

Is that even possible i havent heard of any issues like that before.

What is the vehicle??
Some vehicles have a sensor that attaches to the rim by a big band clamp, but most of the newer vehicles are attached to the valve stem by a torq screw.

Maybe the screw loosened up and back out and the sensor fell off?
Maybe she curbed the rim where the valve stem is and ripped the stem a little?

The picture I enclosed is a TPMS that is a valve stem one.

Found out it was the one connected to the valve stem. It must have come loose and all the air blew out and since she was driving on it, the rubber came off the rim. I guess the d-bag at the garage was trying to take advantage of here even trying to sell her a new wheel.

Anyhow weird since she has had the tires for over a year, it's a 2010 cheap cherokee
