TPMS New Tires

I just ordered a new set of tires and plan on bringing my current wheels/tires to the tire shop and having them mount the new tires on my current wheels. Due to all the horror stories I’ve read regarding wheel studs failing due to improper lugnut torque, I will not be trusting the tire technicians to put the wheels on the 4Runner. Instead, I’ll be using a truck to haul them to the tire shop and back home, where I will torque them down on the 4Runner.

My question: would they need to reprogram the TPMS? Since I won’t be driving the 4Runner there, I assume they can’t program it without the vehicle. Would I have to drive back there once I put the wheels back on at home? I don’t have any issues with this for the peace of mind of not having the wheels fall off while driving down the road.

If you are using the same TPMS sensors (from the same wheels on the truck), nothing else needs to be done relative to the sensors and ECU.

Take in consideration that the battery in TPMS sensors last ~10 years, and to replace the sensors about the same time new tires get installed, to save breaking the tire down just to replace sensors. When replacing TPMS sensors with New Denso sensors, the new serial numbers needs to be uploaded to the ECU in order to be read. :loco:

Why not bring the truck to a shop that knows what they are doing versus giving yourself additional work? A good shop will use torque limiting guns (50 ft lbs) and then torque the lugs to spec.

FYI, Most safety inspection places remove at least 1 front and 1 rear wheel to check rotor thickness, pad thickness etc when you have inspection done. Your truck most likely has the wheels removed and installed at shops at least yearly.
 
No they won't need to program the TPMS, you'll be using the same ones.

Only issue might be is if they break one during removal or installation. But even then they should be able to 'clone' the existing one and keep everything working just fine.
 
"Rebuild" just means they unscrew the sensor and replace with new o ring, washer, and nut.

This is just doing the service packs to avoid that being a potential spot for a leak. Nothing will need to be done as far as programming for that either.
 
Only thing to really worry about, is them damaging the sensors during the removal of the old tires/installing new ones. Some places don't remove the sensors before removing the old tires. Higher chance of damaging them this way. So if the tire light starts flashing and then stays on solid after you put the new tires/wheels back on... take it back :tsk:
 
No need to remove the sensors when dismounting and mounting. You just need to make sure the sensor is in the correct spot when pulling the top and bottom bead off the wheel, then same when mounting so that the tire lip doesn't touch the sensor.

well believe it or not, i've seen techs try to dismount the bead right at the sensor a few times and guess what happens.. lol :shrug::lmao:

Just use a reputable independent shop. I hardly ever run into any problems swapping tires and dealing with tpms, but if I ever do I've got the tools right there to fix it, and cover the cost if a sensor broke or something pulling the rubber. I have had to fix problems that come from people trying to fix things themselves all the time and almost never when we are using the right equipment. Also, you don't wanna have to swap your tires in the driveway. If you've gotta pay a little extra to have a master mechanic as the person touching your truck...you own a very nice and expensive truck. Find the right shop and not worry.

I worked at a tire shop through college, I think I slipped up once and busted the sensor right off when dismounting the tire, didn't have it in the right spot when I started lifting the bead off. Good news is for the customer we always had the different sensors in stock, $100 or so too, and they got a brand new sensor on that wheel for free! :ybrick:

What's the consensus on how to do 5 wheel rotations?

I have 5 TRD Offroad wheels, and 5 brand new Falken AT3Ws, but the spare one didn't have a tpms when I bought it.

Should I have them dismount 2 tires at every 5 k rotation and swap the tmps off the spare and onto the next wheel going in rotation? Or turn off TPMS with that wire jumping trick? Or something else?

I know the subject has come up in other threads, but they all seem to quickly turn into "Why did Toyota do it such and such a way?" complaints.
 
An option would be to have a TPMS sensor installed in the 5th wheel, and upon rotation have all 4 active sensor IDs uploaded to the CPU. The shop might upload the IDs as a courtesy. :shrug:

The 4th Gen comes with 5 TPMS sensors, and all 5 sensor IDs get uploaded to the ECU.
 
Only reason I would ever do a 5 wheel rotation is if you've got highway tires and do almost all highway driving. Otherwise just rotate diagonally, both front to the opposite rears and vice versa and just have a good spare if you need it. Or if you wanna rotate all 5 do it every oil change but your shop is gonna hate you as its standard practice to do that for free if they sold the tires.
 
Speaking of the spare... My wife's 2014 LE spare (yellow ugly 20" spare) did not have a TPMS sensor. I have since swapped out the 20" for TE 17" plus I bought a steel spare 17" and mounted the same type of tire.

Now on my 2018 LE I swapped out the 20" tires with FX Pro wheels and also purchased a steel spare. TPMS swapped out on all 4 wheels...everything worked. I took in my spare wheel in on another date to get the 17" tire mounted and swapped out the spare. On my 2018, the spare was not yellow (same as the other 4) and had a TPMS sensor. After driving for about 30 min with my new 17" steel spare underneath and the 20" spare in my basement...TPMS sensor light came on.

Now I have to go back to the tire place with my 20" spare and get the sensor swapped over to the 17" spare. I'm just hoping the sensor is compatible with the steel wheel. Else I will have to hit a dealer and have them remove the 5th wheel from the ECU. Ticks me off... that will be a 1hr charge at $90 bucks...

As others have stated, find a good local place. I trust my local tire shop with mounting the new wheels/tires. I asked for only hand tools with the new FX Pro wheels and I watched the tech hand torque all the nuts.
