TPMS question

Just got a 2018 sr5p 4wd. Our 2016 sr5p 4wd was just totaled. I took my fn fx pro wheels and wildpeaks off the totaled 4runner and just put them on the new 2018. As expected, the TPMS light came on. Went to discount tire and they recalibrated them. Light went off. next day at some point, the light now blinks when start up and will eventually turn back on. I matched the spares air pressure with every other tire which is around 34 psi.

Do I need to go back to discount tire and have them do it again or will it eventually learn the new psi and eventually turn the light off on its own?

I saw someone mention that the computer knows which tire is what (esp after a tire rotation) and they'll learn on their own. Someone can correct if i'm wrong .

2016 TPMS sensors are probably near their battery life (of 7 years or so) and one or more of them is probably setting off the light. If the 2018 allows you to read the individual values then you should be able to tell which one it is. However, they will all eventually go bad in the next year or so. New sensors (from what I've read) are about $80 - 100 per wheel. Probably cheaper do do them all; plus the spare if the 2018 has a spot for it and you have other than a steel wheel.

While I agree, they are probably getting close to the life span, it just seems coincidental that it's happening now. The day after they were reset. No issues with them on the old 4runner and they were removed from that one 3 weeks ago.

The sensors need to be calibrated to the ECM of the new (to you vehicle). As others have noted, your sensors are nearing their useful life and will need to be replaced. I just did this with a set of Denso TPMS sensors purchased off Amazon for $140 for a set of 4. No more light and happy wife.

No. My 2018 SR5 has no way to see the tire pressures.

No you can't read the values individually on the display, that is newer than 2018’s I believe. And the tpms was already working and installed on these wheels for years. I just removed them from my totalled 2016 and put them on the 2018. It should be noted there was no tpms light on when they were on the 16, even after the wreck. Car was still drivable around collision shop before they decided to total it. So that's why I think they are still working properly, and there was an issue with the recalibration to the new 2018.

They were recalibrated at discount tire. And while I agree they are probably nearing their life span, they were working fine when removed from the 2016 3 weeks ago and were installed on the 2018 2 weeks ago. And when at discount tire after the recalibration, they did turn the light off but then it came back the next day. Not saying one didn't die during that 3 week time between removal of the wheels and tires from the 2016 and recalibration on the 2018, but it would seem less likely that happened over a recalibration issue. Unless them not being calibrated for the last 2 weeks sped up the power draining of the batteries in them, or the recalibration process also used more juice and killed them. For what it's worth my ones in my 2015 Tacoma are running fine still.

I do have 3 spare 4runner tpms that came on a set of method wheels from another 4runner that are only a year old. So I would only need to buy 1 more and have them all changed over. Guess that's a cost saver there.

I found out that sensors from a 2018 4runner would not work on my 2014 when I bought a set of take of trail wheels. The part number changed and they are not compatible. I do not remember what year the part number changed. I just reinstalled the 2014 sensors and they still work fine. I have the 2018 sensors just sitting in the garage.

I think this may be the issue after more searching. Looks like the 2018 tpms part # only matches with a 2019 also...not a 2016

I run a scangauge II to monitor tire pressure, water temp, and trans temp on my 2013. Two TPMS batteries died on my trip to Colorado. TPMS light came on and I couldn’t get a value on my scangauge. Then the shop couldn’t register the 3rd one when I got back home so I ended up replacing them all. $75 each plus install and recal -___-

I've had this exact issue happen twice. I have a 2012 so keep that in mind. tires changed to winters with new sensors (so never before seen by the computer) and then when I put my summers on new sensors as well (so never seen by computer). both times the light was off and eventually came on after a while when putting the tires on the first time. blinking then solid. then every time the vehicle turned on, blinking then solid. I don't know exactly why there is a delay that first time until the light goes on, maybe the computer takes some time to realize it can't communicate with the sensors. both times toyota forgot to reprogram the new sensors, a quick trip to the dealer and I was out of there in 2 minutes after they programmed them. never had the issue again. I bet the same thing is happening to you, discount tire probably didn't program them properly. they probably saw the light off and thought it was fine. you could also have a bad sensor that has died but I don't think so. I would just go to toyota

no charge both times, but I've never had to pay at toyota for TPMS programming when doing a tire swap. I know dealers typically do charge a small fee for this but not always. depends on the dealer and sometimes who the customer is and if the service coordinators like you haha. but if you ask very nicely and are a recurring customer they may do it for free. toyota sensors can be tricky - often times third parties have trouble with them. not always, but definitely happens

I had the same in my 2017 Limited. All of my TPMS sensors are aftermarket, since I changed wheels. It would blink then go steady, but not everyday. I added some air, and it went out for a week. Somewhere online or in the manual, it says that blinking is bad or dying sensor and steady on is actually low air pressure. I replaced the sensor at a local tire shop, and they reprogrammed the new sensor code to the old one being replaced. The old sensor had no indications it was bad on their testing equipment. Replacing it solved the problem.

I have never had Toyota re-calibrate the computer, just used programmable TPMS sensors to match the factory codes on both my summer and winter sets.

It may be coincidence for the timing for you, but the sensor is probably dying.
