TPMS replacement

Reviving an older thread.. my wife is a super worrywart and just remembered the 4R only has a TPMS light. :rolleyes: She's been spoiled by the Jeep that shows pressure readings for each tire, so Im looking around at aftermarket TPMS systems. Any sugguestions other than the one earlier in the thread (only 3.5 stars on Amazon)?

ETA: or if any of the newer OBD-II apps show this I think that would suffice. Tried to see if Carista does this but the info on the site is pretty limited

Thanks, yeah i saw those. The valve stem cap type are massive. No way in hell I'm putting those on my 4R. Ive checked out a few that are the stem type full systems but none with solid reviews. It doesn't seem any of the ODB-II software reads them (short of pc software like techstream).

I'll probably hand her one of these and call it a day :brushteeth:

This radio mod ties into the OBDII and will display actual pressure on the screen temp too if i remember correctly...

Why not put the air pressure a couple pounds high so the idiot light doesn't come on all winter. Repeat next fall. Tell her no light, no problem.

Interesting, I wonder if that's a Limited only thing. I got a fifth TRD wheel a bit ago and need to get to the tire shop to have my spare swapped over to it for a five-wheel rotation. I thought I'd have to pony up for another TPMS.

Anyone know off hand if Discount Tires uses OEM TPMS sensors?

Traction and even tire wear.

Plus i think the tpms detects differences, not necessarily pressure levels. Thats why the display is helpful.

A couple pounds is negligible for both traction and tire wear, IMO, when it comes to normal use.

Not sure what you mean by differences versus pressure level. The OEM setup most definitely measures the actual pressure and will trigger the light when any drops below the set threshold.

Overinflating seems very notceable on KO2s. The added traction from having them dialed in is very helpful in snow/ice.

Yeah the threshold is usually 25%. Having the individual display is a nice feature to keep an eye on them (who wants to wait for 25%?) or for easily seeing which is out of spec and causing the light. It seems strange they wouldnt just include it in the info display. Wranglers have it even though their display looks like it was borrowed from a 1980s calculator. :D

But it doesn't seem there's a perfect solution in sight. Ive emailed a few developers for odb apps and none seem interested in it. I guess not a lot of vehicles make that data available via odb.

I had DT replace all 4 of mine when I put new LTX's on a while back. No idea what they used (don't care) but the install was without issue.

Very impressed with DT. I paid them for rebuild kits with the new tires. One TPMS went bad (7 yrs old) a week later, so I opted to replace them all. The store refunded my kit costs, and installed 4 new sensors. No charge for labor, no charge for rebalance, customer service the way it should be. $180, 1 hour, done and done.

Discount quoted me new ones at $60 a piece plus $15 install per one/ they will wave the $15 if installed when buying new tires.

I thought that seemed kinda high $300!!!!!!

Im shopping for winter set and summer trailer tires, so i need to buy a new set regardless.
 
Figured I'd post in an older post instead of starting a new one, so here goes:

I can get the Denso TPMS transmitters from Summit racing, because I'm not going to swap the TPMS transmitters from my ORP wheels, because I am going to try and sell the wheel/tires as a set.
My question is whether I should use the metal stem, with the service kit, or go with a Schrader rubber valve kit.

I'm going to be putting the transmitters in the FN F(x) Pro wheel, and they are matte bronze, and I don't think the sliver nut that holds the TPMS in place will look good. I think the black rubber would be a better look, plus it's flexible.

Has anyone switched from the metal stem to the rubber style?

Reviving an old thread instead of starting a new one.


Looking for a second set of TPMS sensors and I'm coming across a few different Toyota part numbers. Can anyone confirm which is correct for the 4Runner or if they are year specific? I have a 2018 but feel free to give general info for any 5th gen year. Part numbers I have found:

1) PMV-107J also go by 42607-33021 (superseding part number 42607-33022)

2) 42607-35040 (this one seems to be specific to 2018-2019?)



On a different note, are there any cheaper alternatives to OEM Toyota sensors? Can we use Denso or Max Sensor? The sensors for the part numbers I listed cost $90 each...
I also started to see TPMS "cloning" but can't find much info on that. I really wish there was a simple explanation and roadmap to TPMS sensors.

Bought a spare set (4) from OEWheels have 2 different sets for Toy. worked fine just need to program in !75$ 80 4 maybe for 4

Didn't know this was a maintenance item.
After 10 years the light went on as I was leaving on a road trip (100 miles from home and 600 miles to go).
Just installed a new spare thought it was an issue but from what I understand there is no sensor in the spare tire.

Anyone in the SLC/Ogden area know of a place to have this done?
Any suggestions are appreciated.
 
Those are not OEM, just a cheap imitation.
They show those Toyota OEM boxes, but they came in plastic bags, no boxes at all. I've sent them back the next day, didn't even try to program them.
Waste of money and time to return them.

Thank you for the input. That is kind of what I was afraid of, bait and switch. The correct sensors seem to be about $50 each...
