TPMS Sensors?

2011 Limited here with 20" tires. I do like the ride on the highway but am considering a set of aggressive 17" for off road / snow.

What I'm thinking about doing is putting the 20" on when I have a 10 hour drive down I95 and putting the 17" when going to play off road.

The question is about the TPMS Sensors. Do I need to get a set for the new 17"? If so, do they need to be programmed every time I change from one set to another? If so, is it a big deal?

Or....is there a way to disable the system all together so I can just change wheels without issue?

To disable.....I'm sure there's a wire to cut or one to run to ground coming off the TPMS ECU to disable the warning light if somebody was so inclined to read the wiring diagrams and figure it out. I don't think anybody has yet on the 5ths. There is a write-up for 4th gens but our wiring is completely different.

I just bought a second set as they are cheap on feebay and I kind of like knowing if a tire is going down.

Thanks. Again! Do you also have the Quickset tool mentioned in the other thread? I'm assuming it or something like it is required whenever you swap sets of wheels.

Found out today that the Land Cruiser is the only Yota that has the memory capabilities for two different sets (4x2 + spare?) of TPMS sensors so you can have a winter set and a summer set of wheels and tires.

I didn't bother with the sensors for my winter wheels/tires. Too costly for a few months. The TPMS light does come on, I just ignore it. It also resets every time I pull into the garage where the oems are stored.

Same thing here, I have my winter tires mounted on 5th Gen SR5 wheel take-off with no TPMS. I could not justify added expense on TPMS, ATEQ TPMS QuickSet tool or dealership re-programming. Not really a big deal, winter tires are mounted for two weeks now and the light comes on only once . After I parked the truck in the driveway, in less than a minute (I think) the light goes off. OEM wheels/tires with TPMS are in the garage about 1 truck length away where the truck is parked.

Thanks to philsey's feedback when I was planning to buy winter tire set , I saved a LOT!!!!

Like Harper I like knowing if the pressure is getting low. Also, I do plan on using the new 17" set more than just for winter driving. Considering all that and the fact I hate idiot warning lights reminding me daily that I am in fact a idiot (no need to rub it in) I do plan on getting a set of TPMS sensors.

But the question remains if the ATEQ TPMS QuickSet Tool is the only option? Its $ 150 which I don't think is too outrageous for how much I would be using it. The only other thing I found was the Bartek Reader which are about $ 1500. Yikes!

The other question I had is about TPMS and tire rotation. Seems that both ATEQ TPMS QuickSet Tool and Bartek Reader make a big deal about tire location. Does the TPMS system really care or know where each tire is located?

There are only 4 wheel sensors as the spare doesn't have one. The TPMS on 5th Gens only accepts 4 any ways . Discount tire or most big tire stores will program them for free so skip the stealership . The sensors on our trucks are the PMV-107J to fit the 20 degree face of the wheels.
You can buy them on ebay for like $16 a piece compared to the dealerships $100 plus a piece. You will need the TPMS kits too and ours take the 20217'

They are correct PN's because I've bought 2 sets and just did this last month for another set of wheels. Programmed first time and took less then 5 minutes as I watched as the guy at Discount tire did it. They forgot the first time and I had to remind them. With the Bartek reader start at left front and go clockwise getting sn's from the transmitters at each each tire, plug the bartek into the IBD port ,hit enter, TPMS light on dash flahes twice and sets. Go's on if tire pressure is below ~26.5 psi I believe.Goes back out when you air them up.

We shouldn't routinely be relying on TPMS sensors to tell us tire pressures are getting low. I'm not talking about sudden tire failures here - just routine pressure monitoring. By the time the pressure is low enough to close the sensor switch and give you the dash light, you've been wasting fuel and accelerating tire wear for weeks.

One of my other vehicles is a Legacy GT Spec B. On a Legacy forum, one guy bought a second TPMS module and mounted it in the car, on top of the original. When he installs his snows, he unplugs the original module and plugs in the new one, which is programmed for the snows. In the Spring, he plugs the original module back in. Not the cheapest approach, but it seems to work for him.

I read this solution on another forum...you can buy the tire for a wheelbarrow (typically in the gardening section of the hardware store) and put the sensors inside the tire. Pump it up to 30psi and keep the tire somewhere in the vehicle. It may fit in the spare tire area. The spare may have a sensor so don't forget about that one too.

I've considered doing this on all my cars with TPMS. For the one time it worked as intended, there have been many more times that it went off bec of cold temperatures. And then there was the time my Dad drove on a flat for a few blocks and ruined a TPMS, which easily doubled the cost of the flat tire. :wow:

I'm doing something similar to what you're doing: replacing the 20" limited rims with TE rims so I can put some decent tires on "Frank" (my wife's name for our 4r). However, I actually plan to get rid of the LE rims and tires altogether and just use the TE rims and whatever tires I add year-round.

My only problem has been finding a plain 17" steel rim for the spare tire. Ebay win only included the 4 rims from the vehicle, itself.

Just wanted to post a update.

Ordered and received ATEQ TPMS QuickSet . I did need to contact them for a updated version of their software and also had to download a driver for Win 7/64 but it works. Actually its very simple. Can be used for 4 different vehicles with two sensors (Winter & Summer) per vehicle.

I don't see anywhere that the actual tire location matters but each serial number does get listed as FL, FR, RR and RL

Just an FYI. The TMPS for steel wheels is different than the alloy wheels. I just got the oem set installed on some steel winter rims and the tmps does not work.

Sorry if it's a silly question, but what if I'm just putting on new wheels for year-round use? Can't I install the TPMS' from my current wheels in the new wheels without issue?
