have an 86 got tps problem drivin me nuts,got a BWD ec3149 from oreillys twice wrong one on BWD website it looks right but the part I got looks like one for an 85 ,got one from autozone same thing seems like the part that moves the throttle baffle isnt recessed into the housing so my throttle is at 2000 rpm soon as I start it,sure would like some help tryin to figure this out am goin nuts walkin in the snow,any help is greatly appreciated

Make sure your throttle body is clean before you start adjusting the stops. There a few adjustments to worry about. The first is the throttle stop, that adjust how much the baffle will close. The second is the throttle cable. Make sure there is a little slack in it so there isn't any tension that will raise your idle when you're off the gas. The last one is the idle screw. That whole area needs to be cleaned then adjusted. When you install the new tps, you will need to ohm it out using the fsm since there are a few readings that need to be within spec while adjusting that.
well i put the old one back in and it runs but crappy,adjustments are ok,just the new tps didnt fit right,tabs on throttle body the fit into slots on tps didnt jive tried it anyhows and well 3000 rpm at start up,looked at some pics online to compare what I was dealin with,(I worked parts houses for 15 years),my daughter is up north here in Alaska and bought one sent me pics of it to be sure and still looks like the one I got from O'reallys twice,and the dealer here only pics they had looked like some damn cartoon,and they didnt know nothin as usual,so Im kinda stumped...
just bought this thing few months ago never had a toyota before but tons a chevys so wrenchin aint new to me,rigs dont last long in these woods so somethin that old aint many around for spare parts,things bugs me is all I did was put new water pump on and this problem showed up,pretty solid rig though been here less than a year aint bad fer 2grand,jus tryin to figure out all this weird stuff,and who the heck had the bright idea to hide one screw behind the t-stat housing that ya cant see anyhows,dang

Much better! As far as I know there isn't any hardware behind the thermostat housing, at least there shouldn't be. Replacing the water pump was just a coincidence since there isn't anything attached to it or in the way of it that has anything to do with your problem.
I think your issue lies within your throttle body. Clean it up and check your stops on it. Also double check your vacuum lines and make sure none of them are cracked or dry rotted. Replacing them will be cheap insurance anyways.

well in the middle of taking the tps out so I can compare,but the BWD ec3149 which is for 86 to 89, and the BWD ec3150 which is for the 85 look super close,I dont know what the diff is really,but I got the one for 86 and it wont mount properly,I looked into the intake and was open slightly with minimal adjustment. on BWD website buyers guide it looks like the tps I took off which up until now worked just fine. Just wish I knew enough about these things to make some kinda headway. So if 3 parts of same application are wrong leads me to believe maybe only one company makes all of these and there is a manufacturer error,like I said been a parts guy 15 years and I've seen it happen before,not really uncommon,not much in the way of quality control with anything it seems these days,but should have it off here once radiator done drippin and go from there. Just a really crappy cold wet day here in the rainforest of Alaska so its a hurry up and wait day.
this is the one that came off,the depth of where the tabs of throttle fit into are just a bit deeper on this one,thats the problem Im having,about 1/8 inch or so,and thats making the new one not mount without throttle just cracked open a bit,you follow what Im saying?

So, your dealer didn't know that the '85 and '86 TPSs have different part numbers? I don't know why the Autozone and OReillys are selling you the wrong part number, but you need to get the right one.

well got an error code for it and its been kinda acting up stickin a bit,but I did find a toyota part number and its the one but interchange is all coming back to the wrong part,so hell if I know,but yeah dealer here is about as helpful as mcdonalds,I used to work there. but the toy #89452-20050 is the new one,and
89452-28030 is the one I found with a picture and thats it,same one I posted first. It wouldnt run after I changed water pump,go figure, but if I played with the throttle I could get it to stay runnin if I held throttle open,at least to make sure no leaks in coolant system,which was fine. Really starting to lean twards MFG error,even rockauto pics look wrong,th218 ,158-0531 beck arnley,airtex and both BWD parts will not work.Ive made more ground sittin in my room pokin at my laptop than all 3 parts houses we have in this town,of which I have worked at all 3,hah!! might just have to get a new throttlebody all together,not sure what else I can do really,except sell the damn thing and get a chevy,had 60 a them,fix em blind all day long

And from looking at several different pics,no way those flat tabs will fit into any tps sensor Ive seen,maybe Im wrong though,dont have another throttlebody to compare it to,any thoughts?? what I get for tryin to fix this thing in the dark,we dont get much daylight here in the winter

The flat tabs on the throttle body don't fit into the slots on the TPS rotor dealy, they fit behind them.
Well SOB,I got it figured out,its because I was installing it wrong,so now finally got ahold of somebody here whos knows these things,gotta peel throttlebody off take it to him and he is going to set it because its automatic and he is familular with it,so mystery solved live n learn,but thats what it takes,nobody taught me much bought a car couple books some tools and 33 years later still learnin,hah....thanks for the input anyhows,cheers!!
